Burst into the Library, where Father and Mother tend to spend the afternoons on their hobbies, waving my invitation about:

"Pupah!, Ma Mah! It seems that I am to be presented this Holiday! My Elevation is being made Official! May I borrow Barnesly to help me find an appropriate person to be my aide? I must get one quickly, so MUCH to DO!"

In case it helps any, I have cleaned-up versions of the Far Stars Sector data with spacing regularised for easier text extraction/correction/whatever in both Word and Excel formats; Excel also has a separate column of proposed Trade Classifications based on T5's p.81 and p.434 tables (in case all those blanks at the bottom of the sector-list don't want to be blank any more). If you'd like either, just let me know the Excel or Word version and an email addy, and I'll send it right along.

Oh, and I've got to start being "Jim", and not "Player" .

I was, if I remember, the second person to vote; at the very least it tells me at the top I've already voted and won't tolerate my attempts to stuff the ballot-box.

Just a thought, what do you think, Player?
Please check my understanding: with Language as a Major, I end my career being able to chat up locals like a native in pretty much whatever bar the solar wind takes us to [four languages at Skill-12, two more at Skill-11].

With Language as a Minor, I end up with a total of five points in Languages [thus one language at Skill-12, one at Skill-11, one at Skill-10, one at Skill-9, and one at Skill-8, unless I trade in a language for an elevation of another].

With Linguistics as a Major, I have 23 points of various Linguistic disciplines (Semantics, Semiotics, Phonetics, Etymology, Syntax, Morphology, Phonology, etc), which we'll have to find a use for in the campaign. I'll also be jettisoning Broker-5 (my current Minor), which felt like the place I'd be making a real contribution to the group; the languages were mostly to have no excuse to slow play while we found a translator .

Another possible choice would be to drop Linguistics and take something "practical" as a Major, keeping the languages as a Minor as above.

EDIT: oops, I just noticed p.142 has Linguistics as a Science, so it has a max of Skill-6. I'm going to start re-working the character with some better combo of Major and Minor.

SECOND EDIT: I'm guessing each sub-discipline I took in Linguistics, as listed above, could also be treated as a new Science with Skill-6 max, correct? In that case we're back to: can the campaign make use of those specialised disciplines?

THIRD EDIT: Is it possible we've got some errata-work to do on p.100? It lists "Any Science" as a possible Major, and yet each is limited to Skill-6, which is relatively easy to hit before even entering the Scholar career. Every other possible Major is listed in the first two columns of p.142, thus having no Skill-Max. We also have some issues with Language as a Major, as we've seen in the thread so far.

Open question: Psi isn't the stigma that it is in the OTU; should we be doing anything about it in chargen?

Awesome, thanks. I'll get to work on that after class tonight.

I ended up altering the scholar significantly, and have produced a cyber-shrink (I was reading Asimov; so sue me). He's got reasonable medical skills combined with programming, so he shouldn't be a complete waste of O2.

I think your Term 9 Aging should've been Life Stage 8, not 9, per p.97.

Also, College should be on Ressampo...two Ss.

Thank you! I think that you're right on both counts; so he would still have that unit of Strength. I will correct that. (Who can spell?)

I put myself through college and grad school IRL proof-reading and editing . If the offer's not too annoying (yes, it's happened many times), I'll be glad to work on stuff for anyone here on request.
