Depending on how long would the mision be intended to be, but at leats two or three cases. After all, the fauna in Venus has a fame to be dangerous, and maybe they have to hunt to have fresh meat (are Venusian fauna and flora edible, BTW?).

I'm not afraid about bullets, what scares me is the speed at which they're incoming.

A typical "Case" of shotgun ammo is usually 100 rounds; pistol is 500 rounds, rifle 200 or 300 (depending upon caliber).

You've already got one case of shotgun ammo.

I guessed cases were larger...

I was thinking about 1000 rounds, as I expect to be out of supply for most (if not all) the misiˇn.

They won't supply more than a few hundred rounds apiece. In no small part, because they don't have that much on hand.

THey are stocking the ship's cannon, as well.

'K, there's not going to be a whole lot locally available - it's pretty much urban, so maybe another 200 rounds of shotgun readily available at book rate; above that, it'll be RP-only to find, and probably take some time - something which the OS isn't going to be thrilled with.

[I figure he would probably travel from barracks with the other gunner, so am including Corporal Smithers - if that doesn't fit what you want, just tell me and I will edit so that Sergeant Carson travels and reports alone.]

Having taken the train from regimental barracks at Winchester per orders, Sergeant William Carson and his companion Corporal John Smithers arrive at Southhampton Station, shouldering their gear and rifles as they disembark. Carson, a Southhampton native, leads the way to the Ordinance Survey Director's House. They march directly there, pausing at the gate to buff their boots on their trouser legs.

[Seeing the officers in conversation with some civilians, Carson is uncomfortable approaching and possibly interrupting something (low Char and Soc). He will wait and hold Smithers back until the civilians leave, if possible; but no more than fifteen minutes, as he expects the officers may know the train schedule and he doesn't want to be thought tardy.]

Approaching the officers, Carson marches up and comes to attention and salutes. He will hold the salute until it is returned, then state: "Sirs! Sergeant Carson and Corporal Smithers, Hampshire Regiment, reporting as ordered, sirs."

Depending on the officers' response, Carson remains at attention, waiting for an opportunity to speak, then says, "Sirs! Beggin' yer pardon, sirs, but our orders only covered reporting here with the expectation of serving on an expedition to Venus, but neither Smithers nor meself have ever been off Earth; might we ask a few questions so that we can be properly prepared for our duties, sirs?"

[Assuming that at some point questions are permitted, Carson will ask the following; not all at once, but waiting politely for a complete response before asking his next question. ]

"Sirs, one thing me an' Smithers have been right uncomfortable about, our orders do not specify who will be our commanding officer. From what I've read, most of this expedition will be civilians. What is our chain of command, sirs?"

"Sirs, our Regimental Quartermaster told us to bring all our kit including our rifles, but he only issued us our standard marching load of ammunition. Venus being rather a long way from home, we have worried about running out while there. Will there be additional ammunition carried, or a supply depot when we get there?"

"Also, sirs, again considering the length of our supply train to Venus and how long it might take to get spares... I've done maintenance and repair on Hotchkiss guns, sirs. There are parts that break and can't be fixed without a shop. May we have permission to inspect the guns we'll be using, and check into the supply of spare parts, lubrications, and so forth on board? Also, if we might be using the guns off of the ship, did they pack tripods?"

"Sirs, we have also been informed that it rains all the time on Venus. We have both served in Burma and can stand the rain as our duties require, but we have been told that it is right difficult to keep a uniform from rotting plumb away on Venus, and that all the civilians there wear heavy rain gear when they are outside. Might we be issued such, or permitted to buy our own and wear over our uniforms, so as to keep 'em proper, sirs?"

"Sirs, we have also heard that there be dinosaurs and native Lizard-Men on Venus. I don't have no doubts about those Hotchkiss guns bein' up to the task, but our rifles... Will our service rifles even hurt one of them things, or do we need to look into bringing some sorta elephant guns?"

"Last I can think of for now, sirs, but... will we be permitted any leave time before this expedition takes off? It has struck me that we will be a long time in transit to Venus, and me own father, Joseph Carson, owns a bookshop here in Southhampton. I wondered if we might have time to pick up some reading materials for the trip, err... the better to be prepared for our duties on Venus, sirs."

[After the question and answer, Carson and Smithers will wait for dismissal or further orders.]

The Major rises. "Mr. McBeam, Inventor and Airship Master, Mr. Lawton, of the Cornishman. He waits for the obligatory handshakes, then resumes his seat, setting aside the paper... open to the cricket scores.

"We've one left to interview," he continues, "and he looks to be suitable. He could be here any time before noon. May I see your weapons, Mr. Lawton?" The major inspects cursorily the weapons, then returns them promptly, scratches out a note on a card, flags the steward, who disappears with the card. "We'll load a box of ammunitions for you. Any last minute equipment requests?"
"Thank you for the introduction, Major. Glad to meet you, Mr. McBean." He says this with something of a Welsh accent to English ears.

He shakes hands with Sgt. Carson and Smithers as they're introduced.

"Gentlemen, I just wondered if there would be time for us to take a photograph so I could send it with a short paragraph to The Cornishman before we lift off?"

Ok, then McBean buys as much as he can...

9:50am 9 Jan 1887

A cart with a large urn of tea, and a bunch of sturdy looking teacups - many in china, but a handful in pressed copper.

Should be Private, I think - A single NCO and a private or two, sure - but two NCO's? Unless they're being seconded to make room for more competent... if he's a corporal, he's being seconded for untoward actions - possibly off-duty ones.

He will wait and hold Smithers back until the civilians leave, if possible; but no more than fifteen minutes, as he expects the officers may know the train schedule and he doesn't want to be thought tardy.]

the wait is hardly a minute - "A moment, gentlemen." The major looks directly at the serjeant and stands. "Yes, Sergeant?"

Approaching the officers, Carson marches up and comes to attention and salutes. He will hold the salute until it is returned, then state: "Sirs! Sergeant Carson and Corporal Smithers, Hampshire Regiment, reporting as ordered, sirs."The major's hand is moving before Carson's stops. "Stand at ease, son."

A nod, and a gesture of the hand.

"Sirs, one thing me an' Smithers have been right uncomfortable about, our orders do not specify who will be our commanding officer. From what I've read, most of this expedition will be civilians. What is our chain of command, sirs?"

"Technically, the ship's master, then Leftenant McPhee. But you're expected to contribute in gentlemanly fashion." The major pauses, then "Get a chair, boys." He indicates some over along the wall. "Join us for tea."

Mr. Lawton says, "Thank you for the introduction, Major. Glad to meet you, Mr. McBean." He says this with something of a Welsh accent to English ears.

He shakes hands with Sgt. Carson and Smithers as they're introduced.

"Sirs, our Regimental Quartermaster told us to bring all our kit including our rifles, but he only issued us our standard marching load of ammunition. Venus being rather a long way from home, we have worried about running out while there. Will there be additional ammunition carried, or a supply depot when we get there?"
"The ammunition should be arriving this afternoon for you two and your Metford's. 5 cases each, good waterproof tins, of 200."

"The guns are not ours, son. They're Mr. McBean's. We'll send a box of the usual spares, and a ton of ammo, but boy the R-A boys are screaming about that."

"I expect Mr. McBean may wish to acquire rain gear as well. We'll give you two issues of it. "

"Ericson & Sons has an Elephant gun in, ten-pound-5, and only a handful of rounds for it. But a Metford should do the trick on most anything. As your commander of record, I can't authorize going to that slimy hole, as it's on the off-limits list. But if you've mufti, I shan't complain if you turn up with it on your own financing."

"I do believe Mr. McBean was planning on heading in to town to find some things himself - if at all possible, I would hope the expedition leaves in the morning. And Mr. Lawton has a last minute story to wire. Oh, and lest I forget..." Turning away, he yells at a closed office, "Charlie, the boys have arrived. Bring those orders I had you type up."

A harried looking lance sergeant hustles out, proffers two sheets of vellum with typed content and printed Ordinance Survey letterhead, then hustles back. The major looks, "Serjeant, Corporal, your orders."
To: Carson, William, Sjt., 37th Foot.
From: J. Fellows, Adjutant to the Director General, Royal Ordinance Survey
Date: 8th January, 1887
Subject: Assignment Orders.

From 9th January 1887 until further notice, you are assigned to the A.S. Highland Pride. Assigned posting is as chief gunner. Reporting and pay via Director's Office, Royal Ordinance Survey, Royal Engineers, Southamption.
For the General,

/s/ Maj. James Fellows
James Fellows, Maj., RE, Adjutant to the Director General of the Ordinance Survey.
[After the question and answer, Carson and Smithers will wait for dismissal or further orders.]

"We're still waiting on a couple interviews. They should be here by noon. Cricket game's at one - and I'm supposed to bowl first. If you wish to miss the game, you may stow your kit then, don some mufti if you wish, and make a break for town. We dine at 7, dress uniform expected, mess dress if you own it." Turning to McBean, "If you wish, you can let them stow the kit now."

Mr. Lawton asks, "Gentlemen, I just wondered if there would be time for us to take a photograph so I could send it with a short paragraph to The Cornishman before we lift off?"
