"They had that cargo floater with a 1/4-ton container on it - not everyday you see somebody drag something like that into a bar. They had some big duffel bags pile on the floater, too - big enough like maybe they were carrying their own vacc suits instead of using a locker. The two guys you asked about both had Snub-MGs - we see some of those, but they aren't real common. And of course all of the Bad Boys were armed, not just pistols but shotguns and assault rifles. Really, I'm surprised nobody's guards stopped them for a shakedown, but maybe they had the fix in for clear passage."

"I expect they did. Always helps to stack the deck, if you can." He nods towards the exit in question. "You mentioned vacc suits. If I went out that door, how far would I have to go until I reached an area where I would need to suit up--like an exit, or an evacuated part of the complex?"

Anders, pauses, thinks it over. "Well, you know there's that last big cross-corridor about half a klick on in from here, if you take a right and go far enough out, it has that one emergency airlock, you know where I mean? [You do.] But unless something has changed, I don't think it would be smart to use that for anything other than a real emergency without clearance from the top, do you?" [You agree with this assessment.]

"Hmmm... y'know, I'm not sure what even made me think of vaccsuits, except some of the shapes in the duffels looked like maybe vaccsuits, or else combat armor... and now that I think of it, those two guys, they had that kinda spacer tan, more on their faces from the chin up than anywhere else, like maybe they'd spent some time outside in suits."

[Harris Niven already knows that another half klick or so back into the base along any major avenue runs into closed bulkheads with unpressurized areas on the other side. Various gangs have claimed and repressurized some of the spaces back there, mostly for stuff they don't want anyone else to know about, so exploration is somewhat risky.]

Speaker, viewing his mission as a failure, has willed himself to death in his cabin.

What does that mean? Can a Droyne commit suicide just by deciding to die?

More to the point, why would Speaker view his mission (contacting lost colonies) as a failure at this point? He has only been aboard Fortunate Son a few days now, and he knew they had other duties to fulfill before voyaging onward to Devonia and Freehold.

His assistance as an alternate Pilot is, I'm sure, viewed as very important by Captain Kalos Thar, not to mention his potential as a defensive combatant should they run into trouble at the asteroid. Is Speaker abandoning his friends?

I'm sorry the current bit of storyline is boring for those aboard the ship, but that is one of the hazards of splitting the party. At least the group on XII-H now seems to be making some progress toward their goals, which may draw this separation situation to a close.

Per AM: Droyne, yes, but it's not entirely automatic. Nor is it entirely optional.

Rather than will himself to death, as an alternative, Speaker closed the helmet of his Vacc Suit and did not turn air supply on, quietly suffocating to death.

"Thanks, Anders. I owe you one. Something else I'm curious about--I know you don't know a lot about the Bad Company guys, but do you recall hearing anything about that outfit recently, before a handful of them showed up here last night? Any sort of buzz? Scuttlebutt around the bar you might have overheard?"

Anders shakes his head. "Sorry, Harris, if I had I would have told you. They don't really hang out here a lot; maybe our location is too close to the pads, seems too much like actual work."

Well, OK, so Speaker is dead. I guess the others will have to try to find some Library Data on Droyne corpse-disposal practices, unless he left a note.

[Never had a Player Character actually commit suicide before. You know why we have the current slowdown in action, and that it has been getting better lately. ]
