Default Porting Non-Traveller to Traveller

Because this may not fit in the “Traveller In Other Systems” forum, I’ll post it here.

Has anyone had any experience in converting and running characters from other RPGs in a Traveller environment?

I have already run a Stargate campaign using CT rules; but what if a band of adventurers from a fantasy setting were somehow “ported” from a dungeon in Greyhawk to a research station in the Spinward Marches? How would you handle stat conversion? How would fighters, clerics, mages, and thieves from a Class-Based fantasy environment be adequately represented in Traveller’s skill-Based environment?

I’m in discussions with a DM to cover for him while he takes a long-awaited vacation.

"Keklas! What is your payoff in playing the role of Referee?"
"To challenge my friends, to see them playing before me, and to hear the lamentations of their characters."
