Default Quiet Battlefields

I was doing some research earlier this evening, and was looking at some of the booklets put out by the US National Park Service on the various battlefield parks, some of which I have visited. It also brought to mind the Central Solomons, where in World War 2 you might have 3 US light cruisers unload 4500 rounds or so of 6 inch High Capacity rounds onto a Japanese air base in 15 minutes. During the battle or the war, it was all death and destruction, now there is quiet. At Gizo in the Central Solomons, it is so still at night that you could hear the lapping of the small waves on the sea wall from the restaurant on the second story of the hotel, which was open to the air. The Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania Court House, scene of some of the most intense hand-to-hand combat in military history, on a bright Sunday afternoon was so quiet, everyone was speaking almost in whispers. That one gave me an eerie feeling, and there is no way you could pay me enough to stay there after dark.

I march to my own set of bagpipes. Caution: This individual thinks that studying logistics is FUN.

They that go down to the sea in ships,
that do business in great waters;
These see the works of the LORD,
and his wonders in the deep.
