I don't recall any autofire house rules, however, your own rule seems sound. I would probably add the damage bonus a 2nd time if your margin of success on the attack roll is greater than the Recoil(Rcl) attribute of the weapon.

I've never had an issue with the rules as written and in practice it has always been fast with at most 2 dice rolls (attack and damage). I guess there is a bit of mental arithmetic required to calculate the margin of success and applying the bullet damage multiple times.
