Default Porting Non-Traveller to Traveller

Because this may not fit in the “Traveller In Other Systems” forum, I’ll post it here.

Has anyone had any experience in converting and running characters from other RPGs in a Traveller environment?

I have already run a Stargate campaign using CT rules; but what if a band of adventurers from a fantasy setting were somehow “ported” from a dungeon in Greyhawk to a research station in the Spinward Marches? How would you handle stat conversion? How would fighters, clerics, mages, and thieves from a Class-Based fantasy environment be adequately represented in Traveller’s skill-Based environment?

I’m in discussions with a DM to cover for him while he takes a long-awaited vacation.

Ideas?

Yes. D20 to CE. The trick is finding the points data points of commonality and how much of the non-Trav system you inject to Traveller. For Example you know the range of attributes in both games for a human. The following chart has a nice easy conversion of d20 attribute ranges to Cepheus note especially how the d20 3-18 range matches the 2d6 2-12 and how d20 1-23 standard human range matches with CE 1-15 standard human range. This chart allows you to convert stats all the way up to that Great Wyrm Red Dragon in the SRD.

0 0 0 -3
1-2 1 1 -2
3 2 2 -2

With that progression you make races with bonuses or penalties to stats or items that directly modify a stat:

Attribute Modifier
d20 Mod Weak or Notable
(10-11) -7
(9) -6
(7-8) -5
(6) -4
(4-5) -3
(3) -2
(1-2) -1
0 0
1-2 1
3 2
4-5 3
6 4
7-8 5
9 6
10-11 7

That’s all very nice; but what if the DM has been using a system that bases attributes on 3d6?

You were not specific as to what your originating system is. d20SRD is 3d6 yes? I have in the past done stuff many games even older systems like AD&D 1e and 2e

In doing conversions, you have decide how much of the old system you are translating to conform to the new system and how much of the new you are going to twist for the sake keeping some favored element of the old system. My general philosophy is to try never to use the old system's dice rolls.

Like STR in AD&D 1e/2e. Standard Human range for attributes is 3-18 with that nagging percentage STR for fighters. So I created two charts, one for STR and one for everything else.

3d6? Are you talking OSR (Swords and Wizardry), The Fantasy Trip/GURPS(sort of) or d100(BRP)?

Ever see the old Chaosium supplement/boxed adventure Thieve's World - yes, that Thieve's World.
In it the stats and conversions for just about every major rpg at the time was given.

To convert a fantasy character to Traveller:
scale the characteristics from the original game scale to the Traveller scale.
for class based systems the class becomes the career
combat abilities are converted to the nearest Traveller equivalent weapon skills
specialist skills are converted to the closest Traveller skill
make up some new skills, eg magic

I think Space Gamer had a few articles on this. I can't recall what issues though.

Yes, the original Rosetta Stone of character conversions. That was what got me started on conversion. Marc did not put in a Magic system in his write up for characters though.

There was also a product I picked up called DataCon that did side by side mapping of stat to stat. Each page consisted of a chart with a "stat" with a common evocative name, values in each column consisted of name in one system or another (e.g. Constitution, Endurance) and values incremented as rows. To convert go to page with you stat, find the correct column for your game go down the rows till you find your value and shift to the other game's column.

There is a magic system.

Mages get a magic skill.

The magic skill does whatever the referee decides it does

It's actually a very versatile and freeform system, I think the designers of Mage and Ars Magica may have been influenced by it

PC's, major NPCs: 4d6k3 Atts
NPC's: 3d6k3 atts
