I am going to step in here and point out that the big bookcase games a~la Avalon Hills classics are being produced and played. Take a look at GMT Games web site.

With the success of the Euro style boardgames, boardgames have come back into style. In my crowd boardgames get more play than RPGs do now.

That's very cool. I didn't see many at the last few cons I went to. I'll have to keep an open eye out.

That is most every year, the Con hasn't changed all that much in recent years.

Big part of the attraction of any paper game is we can decide on modifications on the fly without having to have a preprogrammed setting or modkit. It becomes our game.

In the case of Supremacy, I actually got one of my house rules coded into two versions now of an online iteration, which was cool, but of course didn't need to do that in a face to face game.

Madness Games, I'm gathering Robject's home gameatorium as well as mine, has a very large boardgame section. I would characterize them more as Eurogames and/or graphicy, but easily an even larger selection then back in the glory days.

Just not all grognard all the time.

My guess is that it's not wargame that has changed. Its the whorld at large. In the 1990's, we waited patiently for the next issue of our favourite TV show, now one can look for it in the web, also graphics in the games were poor, so the games had to be attractive for their playing, and on line gaming was unusual at best...

All those changes (mostly technological) have brought some changes in mentality too. Now you don't need to meet your friends to keep them on touch, nor to play with them, and, the same way that ebooks are replacing (to a part at least) dead tree ones, computer gaming has replaced (to a point too) board gaming.

You don't need a place to deploy the game (something important in the larges ones), to leave it deployed if you don't finish it in a session, nor even to meet at the same place. And this computer gaming has improved in graphics, making them attractive for them, in many cases at the loss of rules and the game itself..

And yet, I also miss the 90's, but I guess it's moslty because then I was in my 20's, while now I'm in my early 50's...

I did a game of Diplomacy (Supremacy's older brother), and my ally there kept back stabbing me. Turns out he had orders to do so from outside the game group. Neat huh?

I shrug my shoulders at whoever claims ownership, but authorship is another matter. If you made a Star Wars game, but couldn't use any of the main characters like Luke, Han, or Leia, but could reference all the regular nouns and places, and then claimed that your creation was better than anything George Lucas had written, well, I think I might drop your product and question your capacity to reason (as well as your ego).

Well, games are games, and I'm glad more people are enjoying the interactive fantasy that games provide.
