Proto planet disk belters paradise

These proto disk would be a miners dream come true. The desk would have all the minerals all ready to be mind

Funny, but those "proto-planets" in the artist's conception look awfully round and fully-formed.

I agree about the ... usefulness of the proto-disk. I might try to work that into some of my systems that are mostly just rocks and such. What star do you need for this to be happening? What would be "young"?

And Beta Pictoris is actually one of the stars that is canonically listed on the Traveller Charted Space Map:

Any star will do as long as it's just recently come onto the Main Sequence. As for what "young" is, we're generally talking stellar infancy and early toddlerhood. Planetesimals, the main objects of interest, form pretty quickly, as do gas giants, probably on timescales of about 10 million years. Terrestrial planets may not complete their accretion from planetesimals until 100 million years or so have gone by. A lot of unaccreted planetesimals (otherwise known as asteroids and comets) will be ricocheting around the system for another billion years or so before things settle down to the more-or-less quiet and stable sort of arrangement with remnant debris belts that we see in our own solar system.

Its an interesting system B200442 D A High Port serving 10s of thousands of belters on the wild frontier it seems. But they must be rolling in it with a B class tech D star port.

From MgT Alpha Crucis (p.45):

Baytapik is a rocky moon of a large hot gas giant orbiting the bright young A6 star Beta Pictoris. The system is still in the process of forming planets. Violent planetoid collisions have haloed the system with a pair of dusty debris disks containing mineral and carbon-rich asteroids, in falling comics and embryonic planets. The planet is the base for competing asteroid mining and refinery operations operated by Ling Standard Products and Sternmetal Horizons. There is also a scientific station studying planetary formation.

Piracy is a problem in the system as Baytapik’s debris belts offer plenty of places for ships to hide or disappear. Some of these ‘pirates’ may actually be Solomani Navy infiltrators using the system as a waypoint in support of raids into the Imperium.

I never noticed that before!
Obviously it is an errata in the MgT text (I just copied & pasted).

I wonder what the belters are turning up in their asteroid mining?
I assume the comics are on "eccentric" orbits?
