Already showing at least one change from prior canon - psionics.

and much more "Lion-man" than prior edition's art.

"The Second Imperium never managed to tame the Reach..."

Too true. The Second Imperium never got within 100 parsecs of the Trojan Reach.

I can't stand the art. Looks like a Japanese comic book, to me.

I guess I'll have to face it: As much as I try to, I just don't like what Mongoose is doing with Traveller.

The Central Supply Catalogue looks promising to me, but the two pages weren't much to go on. I do like the art in that book--those weapons have a very "Traveller" feel.

But, these Aslan, not so much.

BeRKA,

Let me guess. You've got a MgT writing credit?

From the preview, which is not the whole book:

- The book completely drops the ball on psionics. This alleged Aslan lack has never mentioned before in any previous product. In fact the only Major Race said to be lacking in psionic abilities are the Hivers and canon is quite clear that the Hivers are the only major race with such a lack.

- The hoary "Lions = Aslan" trope gets perpetuated. Despite stating that "... the Aslan bear little resemblance to Terrestrial lions." all the art portrays the Aslan as exactly that.

- The history of the Trojan Reach is completely bolluxed, it bears on a passing resemblance to the actual history. The passages regarding the Second Empire and Second Empire colonies in the region are completely at odds with explicit canonical statements. Also, claiming that the Reach is "... an expanse of uncharted worlds and petty, backward barbarian kingdoms, a chaotic, treacherous zone of space teetering on the maw of the Great Rift." the book chooses to ignore the ~5 subsectors that are part of the Heirate, the 3+ subsector Imperial Duchy of Tobia, the 1+ subsector belonging to the Florian League, and Glorious Empire.

- Reference to the Sindal Empire controlling most of the sector is also at odds with canon.

On the other hand:

- The preview doesn't mention Mongoose's huge prior mistake in stating that the Aslan are an uplifted species.

- The map of the Sindal subsector matches canon and the sole UWP matches too.

- The book seems to address Aslan dietary requirements, something previous canon had sadly ignored. This alone may be worth the price of the book, IMHO.

Going by the preview and Mongoose's track record with Traveller so far - which is a bit like going by a movie preview and the director's track record - I'll go with a provisional rating of Can Be Plundered for MgT: Aslan.

Regards,
Bill

Aslan were never psionic, IIRC. As for the art, it looks fine to me. Aside from the one image of the Aslan in armor next a person for comparison purposes, they look no more "lion-like" than any other version of them.

In CT Aslan have the same psionic potential as humans, vargr, k'kree and droyne.

In CT, they lost their potential 2 points per term, but an aslan term was 6 years or so.
