Question Julian Protctorate

My question has to do with a way of thinking. My wife wanted to work out a campaign in and around Antares Domain/Julian Protectorate.

There seems to be very little about the Protectorate that I can dig up.

So what I can find, I'm leaning to the idea that if using a historical concept that I can imagine as plausible.

1. As the Imperium seems to be formed based on two ideals one ROME and two Great Britain and the British Empire.

2. I read that the Protectorate seems to be influenced or controlled by the Julian Menderes Corporation. As it seems to me also to stylize a scene of the Confederacy, the JP could also not only be Swiss like, but possible it may act like the Holy Roman Empire which was not so much geographic in its later construct but a kin to a confederacy of sovereign micro-states held together under the direction of the office of the HR Emperor and the various Elector Dukes/Princes.

3. In my concept of this the Electors would then form the governing board of the Menderes corporation. The CEo would then be almost like the HRE. Would this concept work?

The Julian Protectorate is the name given to the umbrella defensive alliance that protects the sectors that comprise that region of space. Its worlds contain an egalitarian mix of Vargr and humans, the Vargr were once kept as slaves but were emancipated by the Menderes Corporation.

The Julian Protectorate resisted early Imperial expansion into its territory.

They went to war and the Julians won - the Imperium was forced to sue for peace and re-appraise its expansion protocols - there are hints that if the conflict had continued the Imperium could have been destroyed.

Most of the info about this can be found in the hardback version of the T4 Milieu 0 campaign book.

There was an article in Challenge 49 about the Julian Protectorate that might help a bit too, if you have access to it. There was also a follow-up article about the Hhkar, a minor race in Mendan sector, a few issues later.

I know that doesn't answer your question, but just making sure you hadn't missed the canon info first!

Tiffany Star and Stellar Reaches are two fanzines that produced much of the known Julian Protectorate content that we see today on the wiki.

A campaign between Antares and the Julian Protectorate has much going for it. Racial diversity, two great polities, sub-polities, pocket empires, the Vargr Extents, and and a rich history in the time-line.

I would always look to canon sources before fanon - I notice the wiki entry references the fanzines but not the MT and T4 source material.

Not having read the fanon I can only comment that the wiki articles - which are based on the fanon I assume due to the aforementioned lack of reference - are broadly similar to the MT and T4 works.

I learned a long time ago that it is better to read source material yourself then through the interpretations of a third party.

There is an adventure series in later Challenger mags for a Rebellion-era Antares/Julian Protectorate setting. That may have some information on the polity as well. I'll try and figure out the issue #'s...

Fanon or not, the Stellar Reaches material is excellent. Lots of great ideas and adventure materials.

Stellar Reaches is excellent, making it an exception within fanon rather than the rule.

The owner and editors of SR will also point out that the fanzine doesn't cover the Julian Protectorate, is primarily set in M:1000, is primarily set in the Gateway Sector, covers other species along with the Vargr, details two dissimilar Vargr cultures both of which are different than the mainstream, and is purposely written with certain editorial slant.

In other words, SR would have little if any information for Barsanuphius.

Mike's cautions regarding fanon are well founded, especially with regards to the Vargr. For reasons I've never quite been able to understand, the Vargr attract furries, even more than the Aslan do, and a good amount of the fanon covering the Vargr has been produced by such people.

The Vargr in general are best covered by CT's Alien Module and MT's Vilani and Vargr. The Julian Protectorate is best covered by scattered library data and the previously mentioned articles in the Challenge.

In general, the fanbase of the Vargr tends to think of them as "What would a dog be like if upright, having human hands, and more intelligence?"

Few really grasp that ...
  • Wolves and Dogs are behaviorally different. Significantly so. 20,000+ years of evolution making a species difference that is behavioral, without making huge physical changes. (Huskies and Wolves are VERY similar - visually, it's hard to tell. Behaviorally, HUGE differences, and one can tell when a wolf raided the dog kennel looking for some action... The hybrid pups behave differently within a week of eyes opening.)
  • Vargr and wolves last common ancestor was 300,000 years before the 3I, and really wasn't a wolf like we know today.
  • Vargr are unlikely to have significant mammary development until pregnant
  • Vargr are driven more by scent than smell, tho' not as strongly as Dogs.
  • Vargr and Human Charisma (especially in TNE) are different asset collections. They overlap a little...

They wouldn't be fun to play otherwise.

They were exiled to the doghouse, until I had an epiphany.
