Default 100 Years Ago

One hundred years ago, on the date, World War 1 ended. Called "The Great War" and the "War to End All Wars", it was the greatest war in history up to that point. It featured great technical advancement in a very short period of time. The aircraft went from a fragile toy to an important factor in warfare. The submarine went from a virtual experimental craft to almost winning the war for Germany. The tank came into being in less than two years, and showed its potential for becoming a major factor in war. Artillery fire that had never ever been dreamed of before the war became common place. Poison gas in various forms became a fact of life for the frontline troops, and even those to the rear. By the end of the war, four empires had disappeared: the Prussian, the Russian, the Austro-Hungarian, and the Ottoman. The map of Europe saw numerous new or reborn nations in a manner which had never happened before, although both Poland and Finland purchased their freedom with blood, as the fighting did not end on November 11. It just shifted further to the east.

However, the acquisitions by the Empire of Japan of islands in the Pacific laid the fuse for confrontation with the U.S. A host of broken promises by Great Britain and France left a former ally in Italy angered and dissatisfied. Fascism followed shortly thereafter. In the U.S., a major over-reach by Woodrow Wilson with the League of Nations turned the U.S. inward, The U.S. also saw, following the stroke that felled Wilson its first un-elected woman President, when his wife basically took over his duties in a manner that would not be possible today. Winston Churchill, after being banished from the Cabinet over the Dardanelles episode, re-emerged to become the UK Minister of Munitions, and Lloyd-Georges' right-hand man. Following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, many called it not a treaty but a 20-year truce. Unfortunately they were terribly correct, when an even greater war erupted 20 years later.

Remember the reason for the day today, and those who fought then and now.

Thank a Veteran for serving.

I march to my own set of bagpipes. Caution: This individual thinks that studying logistics is FUN.

They that go down to the sea in ships,
that do business in great waters;
These see the works of the LORD,
and his wonders in the deep.
