Default ThingMaker Range Effects

T5.10, Bk 3, page 170

In the case of things that "operate at a distance", a range may be defined. The effects on the thing design are dependent on the "size" (small S) of the object.

First you specify whether the thing is Portable, Transportable, or Installed. This assumes that the baseline is a short-range portable thing. If the thing is Transportable, it should have a Volume 10x larger. If it is Installable, it should have a Volume 100x larger.

Depending on what Range you specify and the portability, you can calculate the effect on Cost.

The effect on Volume is more problematic, since there is a formula to determine Volume. So in essence, if you want to change the range or portability, you should adjust things manually to get the approximate required Volume change. This means adjusting Size, Profile, and/or Length, Width, Depth in any combination to get the right Volume. Messy.
