OK, So Jebediah is as bumb as a rock.
Now let's see if I am smart enough to figure out the combat rules and pick a gun.
Some questions on Starting Funds and Stuff:
Aramis ... rather than figuring out how to roll in a PbP, can I just assume average dice for starting money? 2D6 x 10 = 70 pounds
Is there any starting equipment assumed or should I pay for starting items out of the Starting Money?
[Things like Rough-Living Clothing, a Rifle, a 'Bowie' Knife.]
With respect to shopping and the character's entrance to the game, should I plan to go shopping 'in character' or plan to just show up with a steamer trunk of personal effects (shopping finished off-stage)?

Just use the rollv tag around the roll required. in this case, 2d6:
(2d6)[5][6](11)
Looks like 110£ to me.

I like your roll.
So, any free clothes/knife/gun?
[EDIT] Found the answer reading through the pile of old posts - 2 sets of free clothes (soc=2).
Introduction then shop, or shop (off-stage) then introduction?
[ADD] Figured stats:
Unconscious Wound Threshold: (Str + End) / 2 = [5]
Dying Wound Threshold: (Str+End) = [10]
Weight: 100+ (20 * Str) pounds = [180 lbs]

OK, I have read up on equipment and the Hiring thread.
As a Big Game Hunter (career 2), I would like to start out with a Long Hunting Rifle (.50 caliber). Since the .577 Jones rounds seem appropriate, popular and comparable to the .600 Nitro Heavy Double Rifle, I would like to have had the barrel on the Long Hunting Rifle upgraded to a .577 Jones Heavy Barrel ... making it a Heavy Long Hunting Rifle (range of the long hunting rifle, damage of the Heavy Double Rifle, single shot). I figure the cost and weight of the Hvy Double Rifle to be about right (10.5 lbs, £10). This adds one more heavy gun and solves ammo problems.
Since the flight is so close, did I hire on back at the initial trial or should I make an appearance as a last minute topman?
Given my choice, I'd enjoy a hiring interview.

Can I be Irish (from the north)?
I know they are one country in 1887, but this way I can still be from a North Atlantic coastal fishing village and there are no hard feelings from the Irish Potato Famine genocide. [Historical, Pre-WW2 ... not political].
Plus it will probably make him more sympathetic to Scotsmen.

Most of the equipment details can be filled in later, but I sort of need an answer to this question to plan an entrance.

You've been around for a couple weeks to a couple months, but as yet, have not met any PC's besides McBean.

Jebediah Thornton
from Knochnacarry, County Antrim, Ireland
Equipment:
On person - Clothing, Foul Weather (wt 3 lb) cost - (Soc 2)
- Clothing, Rough Living (wt 3 lb) cost - (Soc 2)
- Heavy Revolver (wt 2 lb) cost L2
- Knife, Bowie style (wt 1 lb) cost 1/-
- Knife, Two Bladed Jack (wt - lb) cost 1/-
- Watch, Pocket (wt - lb) cost 11/-
Trunk, Steamer – 140 lb capacity (wt 6 lb) cost 8/- - Blanket, Wool - County Antrim Plaid (wt 1 lb) cost 8d
- Camping Outfit (wt 80 lb) cost L2

- Clothing, Rough Living (wt 3 lb) cost L1 (spare set)
- Hatchet (wt 1 lb) cost 6d
- Heavy-Long Hunting Rifle (wt 10.5 lb) cost L11
Jebediah acquired a Sharps-Borchardt Express Model 1878 Rifle in .50-140 caliber (large-bore breech-loading rifle with a long/accurate barrel) while hunting and trapping in Canada. (can fire the .50-70, .50-90, .50-110 and .50-140 rounds, including ammo from the Gattling MG). Jeb was later hired for a hunting expedition into Africa and had the gun re-barreled in London by George Gibbs (of Gibbs-Farquharson rifles) to fire the new .577 Jones round that was gaining popularity among the ivory hunters. The rifle is stored in a case with both the .50-140 barrel and the .577 Jones barrel (total weight 13 lb).
.50-140 Sharps Hunting Rifle: shots 1, mag -, reload 1, wnd 3, str 3, save 1, range 200
.577 Jones Hunting Rifle: shots 1, mag -, reload 1, wnd 4, str 4, save 1, range 200
I still need to find a price for a mediocre suit - Soc 2 trying to have lunch with a client in a Gentlemen's club without getting thrown out.
Total spent £17 10/14
Total weight 116 lb.

Now that I finally have a good vision (thanks to Aramis!) for how to fit the sails onto the airship, I can see why Agility=6 would be good for a Topman - it can be a long way down if you slip! (Maybe we can work out some sort of safety line system, although I would foresee that there would be times when scrambling around the sails, booms, and lines that the line would have to be released - otherwise they would have used them on the old sailing ships.)
Seems odd they did not include a Topman skill deriving from Agility.
However, with Intellect=1 and Observation=1, I hope that "Lookout" is not part of the specified duties of a Topman!
EDIT: Although actually, thinking it over, I don't see how we can manage the sails with only two Topmen - seems like it would take four or six at least! Dropping sails (with lower boom for weight and stability) would be easy, but raising them back up again might be quite a task. Not knowing much about sails or sailing other than seeing pictures of ships, I envision one mainsail on each side (like in Aramis's thumbnail), plus a few triangular auxiliary sails that can be dropped or erected as needed for steering or tacking or whatever they use all of those little sails for on the big ships. Seems like a lot of work for two men!
