Default Kinunir for Squadron Strike: Traveller

The Kinunir is really, really small for the Squadron Strike system, but was shoehorned in there. This is the complete ship sheet for playing in 3D--there's also a 2D version that drops the top and bottom armor, simplifies the firing arcs to 2D, and adds a vector play aid so that you don't need a separate ship control card.

Basics of the Squadron Strike: Traveller system start here: http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Dis...ad.php?t=34209

The Kinunir is way down at the low end what the game will handle--we are not responsible for what might happen if you put it on the table with a Plankwell!

If anyone is interested in more information about how to read the ship sheet, please speak up. So far, there doesn't seem to be any interest, so it's not clear if the effort of posting to COTI is worth it..

Look at the number of people viewing them

I should have said thank you for posting all this long before now.

Please keep it coming - and hurry up and release the game...

I think the arcs of fire for the particle barbettes is incorrect. From the illustrations, they would seem to have a hemispherical arc of fire centered directly to port/starboard.

Is there some other material that limits their arc?

Mike,

Thanks! It's hard to tell the difference between, "Oooh, Kinunir! Enhhh ..." and "Oooh, Kinunir! I can't wait for this!"

(For everyone interested in the Traveller version of Squadron Strike, be sure to read about the mechanics in the Traveller Wargames forum so that you can see why the Kickstarter for the AVID Assistant app is so important. There are only a few days left on the Kickstarter and it needs to make three more stretch goals to make it a full-fledged plotting system for vector movement.)

Oz,

Well, shoehorning the Kinunir into the Squadron Strike ship design spreadsheet takes some doing ...

The Squadron Strike ship design engine measures "hull spaces" in terms of the effectiveness of the system, and the larger the firing arc, the more effective the system. ("Hull spaces" translate to point cost with some other factors thrown in.) This makes sense for a generic system where you want to balance all sorts of design against each other.

Traveller has never obsessed about the firing arcs of various weapons, at least as far as placing them on the illustrations goes. There's no cost benefit to giving a weapon an excellent field of fire or a savings for a restricted arc (please don't quibble about the TNE turret towers ...). Because firing arcs are so much more important in Squadron Strike than in other games, we have to take them into account when figuring point totals for the ships.

OK, I know that this is getting too long ...

Another factor is that ships where all of the weapons have fully-hemispheric firing arcs just aren't as much fun to fly as those with more restricted firing arcs because they just aren't as challenging.

Going back to points and hull spaces, those particle beams are quite powerful when compared to the lasers. Getting them to fit onto a ship as small as the Kinunir requires putting some disadvantages onto them. Expanding their firing arcs to full hemispheres would probably require reducing their damage and/or range.

The nice thing is that, if you buy and register Squadron Strike: Traveller, you'll have the design spreadsheet and you can design your own version of the Kinunir that fits your vision. It's pretty wide-open.

You could even try re-jiggering the sizes of the ships so that the adventure-class ships are fairly large and the Kinunir is a very large ship. That would allow you to treat everything in a lot more detail for individual ships.

I am following this with great interest...but

I do not own a smart phone and have no plans to get one anytime soon (so the Kickstarter does not interest me)

I have owned Attack Vector since it came out, and read the rules several times, but in all those years have never played a game or found anyone else even remotely interested in playing a game

I will probably buy the Traveller version of Squadron Strike when it comes out, but expect to never play it (or ever meet anyone else who would play it)
