Default Beatnik culture?

For various reasons I've recently become intrigued by the "beatnik culture", primarily because beatniks seem to actually value and respect intelligence and literacy, unlike most cultures in america today.

I actually had a minor rea\gard for the goths because they seemed to value intelligence and literacy to an extant, but was repulsed by the rest of the goth scene to the point I couldn't even be near them much....

But then it occured to me that the goths are mostly, at least it seems to me, degenerate, devolved versions of the beatniks, and that the beatniks might be a more tolerable, even interesting, subcullture to associate with.

I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with beatniks, beatnik culture, etc.
