Default Salaries

Hi. I'm new to Traveller and wondered if there is a Salary system for crew members. I thought I saw a chart somewhere in the rulebook, but can't find it now.

Page 137 of the core rulebook

IMO, as most everything in the book, this is just a general guideline. A place to start. It does not take into consideration many factors like experience (skill levels) and the job description (pilot of a fairly safe merchant ship operating in a high traffic trade corridor vs pilot of a ship that hunts down pirates).

I like comparisons. Gives you ideas for tweaking...

Job __________ MGT ________ CT _____ MT & TNE
Pilot _______ 6,000 _____ 6,000 ____ BRN x500
Navigator ___ 5,000 _____ 5,000 ____ BRN x500
Engineer ____ 4,000 _____ 4,000 ____ BRN x500
Steward _____ 2,000 _____ 3,000 _ ___ SL x500
Medic _______ 4,000 _____ 2,000 _____ SL x500
Gunner ______ 2,000 _____ 1,000 _______ 500
Marine ______ 2,000 ______ ??? ________ 500

Note that in CT, highest skilled gets paid 10%more than others aboard in same type job; holding two jobs gets 75% of sum of both, but counts skills as if 1 level less than held.

Note that CT marine salaries are in bk 4, and vary by rank.
Note that admin crew are not mentioned, either, but CT requires them on ships 1000Td+...

For comparison, MT & TNE rates:
MT gives 10% extra per level of skill above 1
Bridge Crew: Cr500 times BRN plus 10% for each level of Pilot or Navigation or Leader skill.
Engineering Crew: Cr500 times BRN plus 10% for each level of Engineering skill.
Maintenance Crew: Cr500 plus 10% for each level of Admin or Mechanical skill.
Command Crew: Cr1000 times BRN plus 10% for each level of Pilot or Leader.
Gunners: Cr500 plus 10% for each level of any applicable Gunnery skill.
Flight Crew: Cr1000 plus 10% for each level of Pilot or Ship’s Boat skill.
Ship’s Troops: Cr500.
Stewards: Cr500 times Steward skill.
Frozen Watch: Cr500.
Medical Crew: Cr500 times Medical
(BRN is Basic Rank Number, the officer rank #.)

have fun

Thanks guys! I knew I'd seen it in the book somewhere! Still getting to grips with the money system and as the crew want to hire an NPC Steward, I didn't want to pull I number out of the air and have it turn out to be totally ridiculous!

You could make the salary figure ridiculously low for a Steward, prompting the more curious to enquire why such a person, who could command high salaries and jobs on the larger and more prestigious passenger liners, would want to work for such a low wage on their crappy little tub.

Perhaps he has something to hide ...

Default Hi

I always kind of thought of the Steward on a small ship as:

1) just someone to do all the little stuff no one else has time for.
2) a way to give the ex-Marine/ex-Army or Other type team member in your group something to do onboard the ship and the salary was meant as a way to ensure he/she had a little spending money available.

anyway, just some thoughts.

Regards

PF

The Stewarding role can be so much more than that.

A really good Steward knows etiquette, probably a bit of fashion and style sense so he could advise the crew on the appropriate attire for a given situation, e.g. "No, the Duke will not grant you an audience if all you've got in your closet is a set of grubby Patron catchers. You're going to have to head for Startown and rent a tux and a dicky bow tie, and don't get them dirtied up by fighting in them!"

On bigger ships, the chief Steward is known as the Purser. Not only is the Purser traditionally in charge of the ship's purse, keeping the profits from all those cargo trades safe - he's the payroll master for the crew and arranges the monthly bills to get paid.

Furthermore, on a civilian vessel the Steward or Purser is in charge of the Ship's Locker. In a military unit this would be the Quartermaster's job, and he'd be handing out the uniforms and kit to the troops - but here, if your crew got into yet another firefight, the Purser's the one to go to for replacement Patron catchers and, if the ship is being boarded, the guns and magazines and whatnot.

Passengers have to check out their weapons to the Steward / Purser, and these also go into the Ship's Locker. What, you thought the hijackers could be allowed to keep their automatic pistols with them on board?

Lastly, the Steward's role is sometimes to provide a measure of respectability. They are the face of the ship's crew, its chief recruiter, and the crew's greatest public asset, at least when it comes to bringing in the business and getting the Patrons to notice the crew as People Who Can Get The Job Done Without Faffing It Up Too Much.
