New to Git. Hope this works. Let me know what you think.

Made with NetBeans. (best bit is Panel4T5Locator.java)

Default BITS update

Message body

Hi Mark,

Apologies, Iíve been away on holiday (and real work does tend to limit how often I get time to work on BITS stuff anyway).

We stopped distributing Traveller Universe a while back because it was so out of date (the author Pete Trevor was always intending to do an updated version but never did so) that it was having problems running on more recent versions of Windows.

If you are interested in world generation and mapping software then I would strongly recommend Heaven & Earth (http://www.downport.com/wbd/HEAVEN_&_EARTH.htm) or for viewing existing systems only, then the Traveller Map (http://travellermap.com/) is probably the best app out there.

Kind regards

Andy

Default Need some help getting Traveller Stellar Cartography to compile

I downloaded the source for Traveller Stellar Cartography which looks very interesting. I have some familiarity with Java because I wrote a program to help people who use Hero Game System.

I am having trouble getting Traveller Stellar Cartography up and running.

I am using Eclipse for my IDE on a Windows 7 box, using Java 1.7.0_79. I got the dependencies setup using Ivy which is working.

Here are the specifics:

Warning:
Aug 16, 2016 5:14:20 PM java.util.prefs.WindowsPreferences <init>
WARNING: Could not open/create prefs root node Software\JavaSoft\Prefs at root 0x80000002. Windows RegCreateKeyEx(...) returned error code 5.
I am guessing this is because I am running the application inside Eclipse and Eclipse is not running as an Admin. Is that correct?

Exception
Error: Load Global JiBX XML Reader Exception. Unable to access binding information for class stellar.data.Astrogation. Make sure the binding has been compiled.
Stepping through the code has lead me to Astrogation.java line 39 where the exception is showing up (actually in the References() library call).

Help?

I have just (as in the last hour) posted an update to the Traveller Stellar Cartography software that will let you get a significant amount further with getting it running.

You need to do the following:

Code:
$ git pull upstream master
$ mvn package
$ java -jar target/cartography-1.0-SNAPSHOT-jar-with-dependencies.jar
This will get the project running, but not working. I've found at least two very bad errors (file open doesn't work, running some dialogs fails as well). Pull requests are welcome.

To everyone else: The last time I looked at this project was a decade ago. I was doing this as a personal project to keep my programming skills sharp(ish) while looking for a new job. And to replace Galactic. Well I got a new job, and this isn't going to replace Galactic any time soon.

If there is interest I'll poke at this more. Fix some of the numerous bugs, etc. Otherwise this is in a public repo waiting for some attention.

It was supposed to be a replacement for Galactic. It reads sector files (of various formats), and displays a map of the area. You can set the zoom level for the map (5 levels) to show different levels of detail. You can define the layout at each level for your preferences. You can view (and modify) world details. The system supports adding routes to the map as well. It can produce PDF and graphic image maps from the details you have decided upon.

For technical details. It is Java, so theoretically runs anywhere, even if it looks terrible. It uses XML as a storage format. This is mostly readable by humans. And I can compress them on the fly to very small files.

The reality is I haven't done any real work on the program is a decade. The program is broken in multiple ways and it needs a scary level of attention. It was originally written in java 4 or 5, and still maintains many of the wildly outdated best practices from that era. It relies upon libraries that haven't been updated in 5 years. It was originally built using ant, and I upgraded it to maven because I understand that significantly better.

It sort of works. I got it to run via the maven build but it won't read the default preferences file that way and crashes everywhere. I got it to run via eclipse and that works better, but still with many flaws. It is a late alpha release at this point.

Ah, many thanks for the information. If you find time to work on it well and good, but real life pays the bills I don't know any programming or I'd jump in to help, best I can do is express interest and cheer from the sidelines.

I only pop in here infrequently, but I'm thrilled to know folks are enjoying it. It's the remnants of the software that I'd gathered over several decades while capturing data for the now silent "missouri archive" (http://www.mu.org/~joe/traveller/).

All credit to the far more interesting recent work by tjoneslo, and I hope to see more out there as folks are interested in doing anything
