forgive me if this is a dumb-ass question but does constructing a 3D model in CGI software like lightwave mean you could then create/export a front / back/ left / right / top / bottom set of flat images from your work ?

Im thinking something like the fold-into-a-box Renegade legion style miniatures resulting from the work .... having this for common adventurer class starships would be way cool !

Yep, that would be easy as pie. All one would need is the template of the box, some cut and paste in photoshop, and poof! One ready to use starship mini. It's a good idea; ISTR Campaign Cartographer used to have stuff to make fold-up building templates....same concept would apply.

<Time passes>
Turns out it is a good idea. I knocked together a template and threw some quick renders of my X-boat onto it, printed it from photoshop with "index card" size, and I think it will work. You'll have to tinker with it to get the size you want, but the file is up in the gallery for your amusement.

One thing you need to know is that it is a lot of work. When I first got into modeling I became frustrated with how much work it was and stopped. I am just now getting back into it with an understanding of how much work it is. I am totally patient now.

You might want to use Blender just to see what needs to be done before getting a pay ware product, if you decide to go this route.

You do not export it. You render the images.
