Shiny!

Though I read something deeply upsetting about the film in SFX yesterday. Not going to repeat it here, it's a bummer of a spoiler.

Something about a character death by any chance?

Those rumours have been circulating for a while now...

And thanks for the link Mal

Well, as you mentioned it:

The way they put it (and they've seen the film), is that not all the crew make it to the end of the film. They obviously don't say who. I suppose that doesn't necessarily mean that they die...

Also, in the trailer, where's Book?

Book may not be in the trailer, but he is in the movie. And yes, I have seen it. Ron Glass, the actor who plays Book, also was at the screening I attend, along with Nathan Fillion (Mal).

As for the rumor, I will neither confirm nor deny it. You'll just have to wait to see for yourself.

It is a strength, I think of Joss Whedon's writing and and a tribute to the the actors' acting that there isn't a single character aboard Serenity that I will be happy to see pass on. I'll be absolutely gutted whoever it is (and SFX implied vaguely that it could be more than one) and I'm dreading it almost as much as I am looking forward to it.
In stark contrast, I watched Padme die in Episode III and all I could think was, 'get on with it.' =(

I could handle it, just about, I think if they resolve River's story in this movie and lose River and/or Simon. I'd like to see them explore Book in the next movie, though.

It's also a strength that Whedon can then chew up at least one liked character if not outright off them a season and keep viewers coming back for more. And if Whedon sticks to earlier patterns, no character is safe. ^_^

Firefly was *just* entering the first plot "snap"* on the way to a season finale. More's the pity but I'm hoping the movie will at least capture some of Whedon's plot finesse.

- yeah I’m a ‘shipper

* I don't know of a good term for what Whedon does in the course of a season. It's more than plot twists. If the plot starts on a line at the beginning of the season, this would be taking the line and snapping it and then coming back now and then to snap or shatter it again and again. You can never get back to where the plot or characters were after each time. Season endings are a plot maelstrom.

I just saw my first episode of Firefly last week - SciFi is running it on Friday evenings, evidently as a run-up to the movie release. I think I missed a previous episode that played immediately before the one I watched, or it was a two-hour episode - it might have been the pilot, as the "shy" girl who appears to be in the movie is a new addition to the ship.

Anyway, I have to say I liked it, though it was a bit "old-school" Traveller (see the thread on Ethical Patrons ). I especially like the no-nonsense approach of the captain when faced with a hostage situation in the midst of needing to get airborne - 1 shot to the forehead. Definitely my kind of captain.

And, it only took one line for the trailer to hook me (otherwise it was entirely too chaotic to try and get any sense of the story):
"This could get interesting"
"Define interesting"
"Oh God, oh God, we're all going to die"
"OK"
