Default Great Men?

One thing about poking around Project Gutenberg on a regular basis is that you come across all sorts of books written by authors who assume that those written about will be viewed as "great" forever. Or they assume that the devastation of World War One will never be repeated and that mankind will finally quit fighting each other with such enthusiasm. All in all, it does make for interesting reading. Some, of course, is actually quite useful in gaining insight as to why decisions were made at the time.

This one book, written for what I assume to be high school students in Brooklyn, gives the biographies of a group of what the auther viewed as great men who would be remembered forever. I am curious to see how many people have heard of or have any idea of who some of these are without looking them up online. This is not a poll, but no cheating. The book was written in 1922.

Dante (1265–1321)
Savonarola (1452–1498)
William the Silent (1533–1584)
Oliver Cromwell (1599–1658)
John Milton (1608–1674)
John Wesley (1703–1791)
Garibaldi (1807–1882)
John Ruskin (1819–1900)

I march to my own set of bagpipes. Caution: This individual thinks that studying logistics is FUN.

They that go down to the sea in ships,
that do business in great waters;
These see the works of the LORD,
and his wonders in the deep.
