*nods*

Gamma World was (is) kind of strange. I bought it as an alternative to Traveller because Traveller was very vanilla flavored, and tackled mostly security themes. Things like mutants or other scifi didn't seem to exist in Traveller. But yeah, for all its gloss Gamma World seemed one dimensional to me.

I'm right there with you. A friend and I ported Morrow Project over to FASA's Aftermath system and we had a blast with the setting. I still have some of the notes from back then but most of it is sadly gone.

Going on number of years spent GM-ing, my list must be:-
FASA Trek, (Starfleet or Klingons) - thinking about revisiting.
TNE - but I would probably never touch again.
MERP- I would play at the drop of a hat.
Call of Cthulhu-still love it, but suffering Mythos burnout!
Then Toon, GURPS, CT, D&D, Car Wars, Battletech, AFMBE etc, etc

I started out role playing with AD&D, but upon discovering RuneQuest, I never looked back. I've largely forgotten how D&D was played. Now that RQ is back in Chaosium's stable, I'm reacquiring.

I have played Gamma World briefly, and once GM'd Boot Hill. That later didn't take hold though...

There was also a period where we would gather at a friend's house for Star Fleet Battles, which was the closest that I ever really got to wargaming in the classic sense.

I went through a brief time with playing Vampire the Masquerade, but never sought to GM it.

Traveller was my baby and I was the only one in my group who would GM, so I've never "played" it.

Here are some really cool links for those who want to take a trip down memory lane. As per forum policy the following links are to sites that have information and images related to classic 1980's "pocket" or zip lock bag games.

https://maverick.brainiac.com/cmm/cmm_index.html
https://dwarfstar.brainiac.com/
https://micro.brainiac.com/database.html

For those of us old enough to remember Star Wars on opening day, some of the first Trek conventions, and the classic Stewart Cowley books along with our favorite science fiction RPG, I hope you enjoy these links.

Other games that I love that are not role-playing games are the original History of the World by Avalon Hill, which is a great game as well as a wonderful way to teach World History, and the Empire Builder series of Rail games by Mayfair. My favorites in that series are Australia Rails abd Iron Dragon, the fantasy version. I like to travel by sea, and that game allows for it.

Games I love
Traveller, mostly CT but borrow from most editions
The Fantasy Trip

Games I play but would not GM
D&D of any version
Call of Cthulu
Warhammer RPG

Games I've played but not in a long, long time
Gamma World (I miss my flying polar bear!)
Top Secret
and a lot of others that have drifted out of my memory

Traveller simply because it was my first RPG, I started playing in college despite having the books in high school, and the min-games all lent themselves to a lot of solo play, as well as making fun programs for various aspects of that.

The Fantasy Trip as it is a lot more straightforward in its mechanics, is a lot more open-ended than most fantasy games, and of course, I started in college with that as well (college was apparently a very impressionistic time!).

Both of those systems have allowed me to play with making maps. Always been a map-fiend - did not hurt that my father worked at NOAA and would often bring maps home. I still prefer a paper map over GPS just so I can see the "big" picture, although I do rely far too much on GPS now.

The group I am back with again, after a 20+ year hiatus from gaming, plays all sorts of games. The one thing I wish we would do (and I am trying!) is to continue games. We have 1 & 2 month sessions, then switch to give people time to play and not always GM. But we rarely get back to previous games. The two I've refereed (a Traveller game that actually was continued but was left hanging at the end, and a Fantasy Trip game that has more possibilities) I keep mentioning as a possible game should people want to continue in the next session.

Edit: I also love board games, but I suck at them which is why I started RPGs. In fact, I've recently started a post-work gaming group as 3/4 of the in-house developers love to game but rarely get to do so. The conference room table is ideal for gaming. In fact, the 1 developer we hired in part because she was a member of the Asheville board game meet-up (so I have a bias towards people who game; she also need the edge as she is the only developer out of the 6 we have without a beard, not being a Dwarf and all that. I believe at this point in time, all males in Asheville, NC require a beard. Durn lumber-sexuals!)

Upthread, I mentioned that Justifiers was no longer available.... but now it is. It's over on Drive Through RPG.
  1. Games I love...
    • Mouse Guard
    • MegaTraveller as I have houseruled it
    • WEG d6 2E (not revised) - I find it a much better game than 1e
    • Legend of the Five Rings 3e and 5e.
    • The One Ring (1E & 1RE)
    • Firefly
    • Prime Directive 1e (the dicepool version with "tricodes")
    • FFG Star Wars
  2. Games I like, but not love, or love with the right group:
    • Dragonlance Fifth Age... awesome
    • Pendragon. 4th edition.
    • 2300 AD - like it as released by GDW. Not a fan of Colin's work, tho' his work is excellent.
    • Kobolds Ate My Baby
    • Og! Unearthed Edition
    • 5e D&D in non-public group
    • FASA Star Trek the RPG. (2e over 1e, but only just)
    • Albedo (T&I/Chessex version. Love it, but have never had a group suited for it.)
    • Justifiers (love the setting, merely like the rules themselves. Good blend of level-based and skill-driven. Better than Palladium.)
    • The Arcanum (Palladium done right)
    • Dresden Files (Fate, not the newer Fate Accelerated version).
    • Burning Wheel awesome if buy in happens. Lousy if not.
  3. Games I Used to Love
    • AD&D. I grew out of it ...
    • Alternity... but then I got to realizing that people prefer to roll dice based upon their sheet, not the difficulty. And than them rolling based upon their sheet is faster for me as a GM.
    • Arrowflight 1E. 2e just lacks the charm, and went with a simpler but far less good dice mechanic and damage mechanic.
    • Warhammer FRP 1E... It's not bad, but I somehow just don't react positively anymore to it, and the newer editions all are meh.
    • Dark Heresy. Grimdarked out
    • Marvel Heroic - demoted to "Really nice" by Sentinel Comics.
    • AMSH - TSR marvel was (and is) a blast with the right group... but I've not had that since the 90's
    • GURPS. Loved in the 80's. Liked in the early 90's. Hated in the late 90's. Detested the hardcore fanbase since the early 2000's.
    • LUG-Trek... until 2 campaigns in, I realized that the math was really bad, and was why things were not working well for the group.
  4. Games I expect to like when/if I actually get them:
    • Sentinel Comics. The Starter kit, a preview, was sufficiently good as to displace Marvel Heroic.
    • Alien - The Cinematic Starter was awesome. At my $1/person•hour rate, it has half validated my Alien RPG preorder.
  5. Games I want to get to table before committing:
    • Modiphius/Dream Pod 9 Dune
    • Magical Land of Yeld

╣: making attribute assets = Att/3, rather than att/5, increasing needed numbers to 8+,
