Default Conan the Barbarian revisited

So I'm trying to reread Robert Howard's official tome of Conan stories, and I'm still coming to the same conclusions about the character and story presentation; I dislike Conan as a drug user, racist, and overall uncouth anti-hero and male chauvenist pig, but I can't help but give a nod to Robert Howard's command of prose.

Conan reminds me of a lot of long haired blond-pony tail bikers with full beards and moustache from my younger days in Sacramento and Modesto. He's got that Nordic gene thing going for him, and only abides by rules when they suit him. I just don't connect with this guy.

Can someone tell me what it is that I'm eschewing or missing? I'd like to hear thoughts from true Conan fans.

Thanks in advance.
