Small Starburst [T5 ATU] Native Intelligent Life of the Far Stars Sector.

This thread is for Referee (Magnus von Thornwood) or his agents to post NIL in. Please keep it clean.

I will be posting the NIL of the Far Stars sector here. The first Sophonts will be concentrated in the Permatic Imperium and after they are done, I will move on to the rest of the sector.

Enjoy and comments welcome, I reserve the right to move conversations if the are distracting from the primary purpose of having a place for people to find info on the Sophonts of the Far Stars.

For those interested, I have finally got around to pulling the data for Native Intelligent Life in the Far Stars and of course I started with the Imperium.

So, here I present more additions to the Things I Have To Create list. In fact, I have to create/mod a boilerplate for doing up Sophonts now since I really should have the NIL for the Captial done up. Well, enjoy.
While in the OTU the Sophonts (or Aliens if you will) are classified either as Major or Minor Races according to whether they invented/discovered Jump Drive or not, those that did are the Majors, those that did not are the Minors. In the ATU of the Permatic Imperium a slightly different definition is used. A race or species of Native Intelligent Life is a Major Race if its Homeworld is a Member State of the Imperium, the NIL of Client States or Imperial Domains are classified as Minor Races. The standard TL required to qualify as a Member State of the Imperium is TL-9 (low interstellar), there are of course exceptions, such as Sphic which is has an Imperial County Seat or Ahoma who built and maintain a Class C Starport (with the help of the local Imperial Maquis) in order to show their readiness to join the Imperium. Most states in the Imperium TL-8 and below remain Client States and thus their NIL remain classified as a Minor Race. Not quite all fair and square, but then neither is life, kids.

Small Starburst [T5 ATU] NIL: The Edendextu of Permatic. ([FS 1725] K7 V)

The Edendextu of Permatic.
[FS 1725] Permatic, Capital of the Imperium.

The Edendextu of Permatic were the very first species of the then named Riftborne Region (now Domains) to make contact with the then flourishing Fifth Star Empire of Man and Kin. Theirs is a small world by the standards set many eons ago by the mythical first humans, the dreaded, tyrannical Terrans. Sill, it is good system, the Terran Standards System if created by a somewhat "over orderly" people, after all they were our ancestors and look where we are now.

So, there they were, the Edendextu, at a solid mid-interstellar tech level just beginning to truly conquer their stars, becoming a mighty if still minor interstellar state. Their newly constructed spinal mounted meson cruisers keeping the peace and the trade flowing as the several thousand ton star-freighters ran routes. They were just beginning to experiment with a new, more powerful plant and longer ranged Jump drive when, shock of shocks, they discover there are older, more powerful, technologically advanced races already out there. Oh, and they got sort of off course having jumped from the edge of the Galactic Arm and where wondering if they could set up a base here while they scouted out a route toward their original target. The Edendextu were just advanced enough to realize how outclassed they were, so of course, they agreed to let the Mankinds stay in their space. This was the true start of the Edendextu's history, the previous stuff was just set up.

Upon first glance they appear to large, grounded avians, or feathered reptiles, they are neither. Perhaps their ancient ancestors were flyers, but the current Edendextu of modern times is an example of standard walking, herbivore who came out of the deep forest to eventually venture into deep space. Massing around a hundred kilos Edendextu appear large, tall and slightly hulking compared to a standard human. The basic example is covered in fine scales, has a bony interior with a lymphatic system for circulation, but otherwise conforms to a bilateral standard. They have one head containing the brain and sensory organs, a torso from which extend sets of two arms (ending hands) and legs. They have no tail, but have been known to use biting in personal combat. Remember if an Edendextu puffs out it scales and crouches, it is possibly biting time. Having evolved from forest dwelling, intermittent herbivores it is not uncommon to see them munching away on a small take out salad and while they maintain their vegetarian heritage, they do seem have a thing for eggs. Caesar salads were all the rage for a while on Permatic back when they were introduced. They have since waned in popularity, but have never quite gone out of style and pretty much every restaurant has a variation.

The Edendextu are pretty traditional by human standard with a dual gender structure of female and male, with gender fixed at birth. The females tend to come out weaker in strength and dexterity, the males however have noticeably less stamina than the females. While they may be physically weaker, the females of this species clean up on the intelligence and are on average much smarter than the males. They also significantly outweigh them in sheer numbers born to this species making them the movers and shakers in trade and commerce, the military high command, as well as diplomacy and statecraft.

Edendextu show a duality seen not only in their gender differences, but also in that they age both quicker and slower than humans. They start off with a shorter childhood entering adolescence around six or seven years compared to a human's nine to ten years and are legally young adults who may begin Imperial Service Careers or enter into binding contracts at age fourteen. By their early twenties to right around thirty most of their species are establishing themselves, picking and starting careers, or perhaps trying several in that same period. When an Edendextu hits its Peak, it is then that their aging slows in comparison with a human baseline. They peak on average twice as long as humans do, once they have established themselves in a Career they are likely to stay on longer than humans would. Their midlife runs from the later forties to early fifties, the senior years running from the mid-fifties to mid-sixties. The life stage of elder is long among the Edendextu lasting twelve years to a standard eight, yet again though the longevity of this race shows and their retirement last until around a century. This is species that takes pensions very seriously.

Vision for Edendextu is similar to humans but in ranges of Cerise (680 nm) C (to humans a barely visible, deep reddish color), Aglow (750 nm) A (the edge of infrared and the peak band) and Nearir (820 nm) N (or Near Infrared). The Edendextu have a form of thermal vision in addition to seeing in reflected infrared light ranges due to their star's output. The light of G stars that humans enjoy is largely invisible to them and they need special equipment to make it out. When it comes to hearing the Edendextu, it is centered around Middle C or 256 Hz, their span is narrow at only one octave above and below Middle C allowing them to hear sounds clearly from 128 Hz to 512 Hz. The voices of Edendextu have a lower range at 64 Hz to an upper range of 256 Hz, which clearly shows a lower vocal range than they can consciously hear. It is believed that these low tones are used to communicate certain subconscious information much like human body language does for humans. When it comes to odors Edendextu have a sharper sense of smell than humans, and they have a sensitive sense of touch being about twice a sensitive as a human's. While humans generally don't have Awareness or Perception, the Edendextu have both at fairly average for galactic standards, they do have a slightly better sense of Perception. As they have both a voice and hearing, their primary language is verbal, followed by a written form.

When it comes to special abilities, the Edendextu come out with several, as race they have the ability of Mem Vision and they tend toward mechanical trades. The females show ability in the art of dance which may stem from ancient courtship dances done to secure a mate, they show excellent math skills and make fine Craftsmen. Male Edendextu may not have the intelligence of the females, but they make up for it with their abilities which includes Hypno and Mem Perception, they also show an improved sense of Perception.

The Voodgi of Colony A.
[FS 0724] Colony A, A World Under Foreign Dominion.



The Voodgi are named after their discoverers Linus and Sintari Voodgi, noted explorers of the frontiers during the early expansions of the Fifth Imperium past the galactic arm. They have no verbal name for themselves since the whole species is deaf. The Voodgi use a visual sign language among their own kind and a translator system when wishing to converse with species that use other language mediums. The sign-name they use for their race translates to "The Surviving Ones".

The Voodgi are omnivore gatherers who began their ascent to their current space age in the rough terrain in the low lands of their homeworld's mountain ranges. It is in the low areas at the feet of these mountains that the major Voodgi cities can be found.

The Voodgi have a head with sensory organs, a torso containing their brain, and a pair of legs that due to their asymmetric nature has merged into one leg ending in a hand that functions as their as their forelimb. They have three groups with two legs per group as their rear limbs and are used for walking and climbing across their native terrain. They have a interior cartilage skeleton and a foaming fluid performing the functions of human blood does for that species. They are covered in generally earth toned skin. Their one forelimb or arm ends in a hand like manipulator.

While the species is stone deaf, their other senses more than make up for the lack. The Voodgi excellent vision has a spectrum that begins at around 610 nm (Red) moves through 680 nm (Cerise, bleeding into infrared) and ends around 750 nm (Aglow at the edge of Infrared). The Voodgi sense of smell is roughly twice as sharp as a humans and they can detect odors not noticed by humans. While the species' sense of smell is exceptional, their sense of touch is even more spectacular when compared to humans. Not only are their vision, smell and touch superior to that of humans, they are also Aware. This Awareness allows them to sense E/M fields and "see" in Bands of Lek and Mag. This give the Voodgi a form of Synthetic Vision and a vastly different view of the universe around them.

Egg Donors are the predominate gender of the Voodgi, the rest of the population is split evenly among the Activators and Bearers. They are not a dexterous race, but a graceful one. Additionally, the whole species seems to been prone to a weak endurance compared to Terran norms. Otherwise, Voodgi Egg Donors' characteristics are on par with human norms. Egg Donor Voodgi have better vision compared to the other genders. The Egg Donors are known for their intuition and favor the biologics trades.

The Activators of the Voodgi are less graceful, have far better endurance and slightly better social standing which is understandable since their gender is responsible for choosing which eggs are activated and which are recycled. This gender of the Voodgi hibernate during the winter period, exhibit a talent for visual memorization and when not hibernating they function as craftsmen for their society.

Bearers tend to have a weaker strength than the other genders. They also are only slightly more graceful than Activators, but not by a large margin and to a lesser extent share that genders' increased endurance. The Bearers also exhibit a significant increase in intelligence compared to the other genders, but due to the nature of Voodgi society tend to fall to the bottom of the social standings. In addition to being on the low rung socially, upon transforming to this gender they lose their sense of Vision finding it replaced with a low end Perception. Bearers also hibernate, but mostly do so when actually bearing an activated egg. When not hibernating they tend to favor the arts or turn to crafting. They are also gifted with an increase in memorization abilities.

Their social structure seems to be modeled on their ancient roles in which the Egg Donors use their excellent vision to gather resources for the Activators in hopes of having their eggs chosen. Meanwhile the lowly, yet intelligent Bearers actually control the final destiny of the species as they chose which activated eggs they will bear. This gives them a certain control and they often "advise" the Activators as to which eggs to activate.

Voodgi have lives only slightly shorter than human norms, averaging a life span of seventy standard years. While many of their life stages mimiic those of humanity, they have a short peak of around four years compared to human's eight. They do on the other hand (a metaphor that drives the Voodgi into a tizzy having only one) have long retirement age usually around eight years, beginning around their late fifties and early sixties.

OOC: Can i get some elaboration on the Edendextu? Are they like Dracs from Enemy Mine, bur with feathers? are they humanoids with reptoavian features? Gimme some references... Archaeopteryx people?

Haven't worked out the details as of yet. Frankly at this point they are sort of a background thing and I am not sure why the interest.

Baron, since Mags only has a few notes and you are working up the planet, maybe you would like to try your hand at the NIL portion of the rules?

Get Mags' notes on them and flesh them out in more detail? It would help Mags and you get to somewhat guide their development.

Just spitballing. I haven't tried those rules yet, so I don't know how ugly they get.

I am familiar with OTU and IMTU, but I can't recall ATU for the life of me.
