Default 'Li-fi 100 times faster than wi-fi'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34942685

A new method of delivering data, which uses the visible spectrum rather than radio waves, has been tested in a working office.

Li-fi can deliver internet access 100 times faster than traditional wi-fi, offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second).

It requires a light source, such as a standard LED bulb, an internet connection and a photo detector.

Sounds interesting.

But why would that be? Aren't both waves moving at C?

Probably based on how the wavelength is modulated. Higher frequency = more bits per meter.

Pretty much. Higher frequency means more bandwidth. And since visible light is 430–770 THz (compared to WiFi 2 Ghz) better throughput.

But it runs into the same problem as with higher WiFi frequencies. Shorter effective range and line of sight only. With the added bonus you now have to worry about colour co-ordinaiting your office so the Li-Fi works and is not being absorbed by certain colours.

"Tell that guy wearing the ugly Hawaian shirt to leave!"
"Why? It's an eyesore sure, but he isn't hurting anyone"
"He's interfering with my Li-Fi!"

Interference outside from the sun? Urban setting? I don't think so.
Essentially, their taking fiber out of the wire.

So, this will be great in deep dark places, or perhaps in space activities.
