An Adventure Hook
I came across this on Project Gutenberg, and it would make an interesting adventure hook for any Space: 1889 fan and would not be bad for Traveller either. For Space: 1889, you would have to adjust the dates a little bit, and for Traveller, you would have to work a bit more at it.

I'll have to see if I can find the video. Someone put a vid up on YouTube of whaling in the upper atmosphere of a world with giant flying animals.
