Great analysis, whartung.

Entering the gas giant's atmosphere is definitely a chump's game. The corvette would lose it's (presumed) sensor advantage, lasers would be effected while the missiles from the three corsairs wouldn't.

Whether the corsairs are there to kill or capture, disengaging after spotting the other two corsairs is the right move.

being stuck in a nasty gas giant gravity well when your power plant goes dark due to damage -- not a nice place to be.
that goes for both sides. "warriors, come down to PLLLAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ...."

when you write your story, do you intend to protray the battle from both sides? watching the three vargr captains interact with their own crews and with each other can add a lot to the story.

reminds me of when howard hughes made his wwi aerial combat movie. spent a lot of money, but watching it afterwards he realized that the planes maneuvering in the clear blue sky looked ridiculous on film, so he told the set and air crews to entirely redo the movie on cloudy days. the entire cast sat on the tarmac for 9 months, not one cloudy day.

Hughes may have been a genius, but not about film making. They were filming airplanes, not immovable setpieces. They could fly to wherever there are clouds, like the East Coast somewhere.

But back on topic. If it is like Kobayashi Maru, all the ships are already in firing range. If that's not the case then it isn't so bad. If the corvette's first couple of volleys gets a lucky engine hit, the situation looks much less dire at 2 vs 1, but still bad.

You're writing a story, the key is to make it believable.
