Arguably, this is why there are no game or hobby stores in the area.

That horse is long out of the barn.* Given that there are now no such stores in the area, what should we do?

*There are a plethora of other contributing factors, including a major game distributor that went under in the early-to-mid 2000s without paying publishers for product received or delivering said product to retailers for funds rendered. Guess which group was overall least able to absorb the resultant losses?

Well, counting a Games Workshop store, there are 5 hobby/game shops within 45 minutes drive of me, not counting Hobby Lobby and Michaels stores. I guess it depends on where you are at. What is surprising is that there is no games shop in Lake Geneva, where TSR started.

In talking with Michaels and Hobby Lobby, they do not do special orders for Safari Limited stuff, but just take what their supplier ships them. That does mean that for some tubes of figures, I will have to order online. They do have some fantasy tubes, to go along with the dinosaurs, with one tube having a figure of Poseidon in it.

They do have one Astronaut tube, but that only has a couple of vacuum suit figures along with various satellites and a Shuttle, so not that useful for Traveller or Cepheus Engine unless you are on the ground. It will also depend on how set your players are of having a figure that exactly represents their character, or something that is reasonably close.

Given the range of Legos in the Star Wars and Superheroes range, I keep thinking that for the not-to-fastidiuous gamer, those would work nicely too.

Getting back to this as I am working on a couple of D&D ideas using the older D&D Basic/Expert/Companion/Master books, along with some 1st Edition AD&D and the little tan books. Looking at the cleric spells in the Expert Book for creating water (4th Level) and creating food (5th Level), a 7th Level or higher Cleric would make a really good supply officer, especially for a ship.

The Create Water spell produces sufficient water for 12 men and their mounts, i.e. war horses. The Create Food spell produces sufficient food for 12 men and their mounts. I am not sure if the authors thought a lot about how much a horse really eats and drinks. A 1896 army handbook for light artillery has the regulation ration for one horse at 12 pounds of oats (or barley or corn) and 14 pounds of hay. Wolseley's 1886 Soldier's Pocket Book has 12 pounds of oats and 12 pounds of hay, along with modifications based on field service. The U.S. Army figured on 6 U.S. gallons per day for a horse, while Wolseley allowed for 6 to 8 Imperial Gallons (equal to 1.2 U.S. gallons) per day for a horse. At 24 pounds of food and 6 gallons of water a day, the ration weight for one horse could feed 6 men. That water and food for a dozen horses converts into food and water for 72 men. Adding the 12 men included as part of the spell, you get two spells from a sufficiently high cleric could feed 84 men. That is the crew for a fair-sized ship or a couple of platoons or a small company of infantry. For every level higher in rank, the cleric can feed another dozen men and their mounts.

The Continual Light spell is another one that I could never figure as to why it was not used more. It is not that high a level spell, and you get experience from casting spells. Having a continual light source that did not produce heat would seem to be a very good thing to use below deck on a ship, or in a wooden building for that matter. I am working on one story, sort of D&D based, where the city has Continual Light Posts in its commercial district, each with a plaque advertising the magician or clerical group that produced it. They are also being used in the local shipyard, being far safer and providing much better lighting that either candles or lamps. Of course, the problem is that you cannot turn them off, but such is the ways of magic.

In re continual light:

One of the common rationales for why it wasn't used more was that it slowly consumed the object.

Now, a proper D&D world using the magic as it should be? astronomers/astrologers would have to leave town.

If it's adequate light for crops, the underdark is suddenly a rich farming option, and its time to drive out the drow... keep your managed forrest topsde, and move the staple crops into the underground.

1. Continual light, in theory a diamond would last the longest, though I suspect a piece of granite would be a suitable substitute.

2. I don't recall if it's the equivalent of Sol sunlight, or if it's fluorescent, or if you can tweak it.

3. Light proof cover.

4. Maybe you can use filters to obtain certain outcomes.

5. Or combine a bunch of different sources to get a laser.

Logisticians may specialize in creation spells, so more bang for buckwheat.

A sapphire or even a chunk of jade is better; the duration was (in the article) set by value, not durability.

In 5E, at least, no. Daylight is. Don't recall for prior.

Sounds like it's connected to the Disintegration spell: chuck a couple of Continual Light spells on the castle gate, and then patiently wait for it to corrode.

Radiation released can be assumed to be mostly harmless, or at least normal background, as one assumes the molecular bonds are slowly withered away.

What is this molecular bonds you speak of?

Every sage knows that everything under heaven is made up of air, fire, earth and/or water, held together by the will of the Gods.

Sounds heretical.
