Default Memorial Day

First, to all those who have served in the military, a very big

THANK YOU!!!

For all of those who have lost relatives or friends that were serving in the military, my genuine, prayerful condolences. Without their sacrifice, we would not be participating in this forum.

While driving about yesterday, I heard a radio commentator wish everyone a "Happy Memorial Day". That started my brain going. I am a veteran, a disabled one, and have quite a lot of knowledge of military history, and not of just the US. There are a few different accounts of the origin of Memorial Day, but all agree that it started after the US Civil War, the deadliest war in US history. (Side Note: Both sides lost more men in deaths than the US lost in World War One, and the Civil War accounts for more than half of the US total war dead.) Somewhere in excess of 2% of the entire US population died in the Civil War. Given that, and then the US losses in World War One, which is the origin of Veteran's Day, which originally was called Armistice Day, commemorating the Armistice on November 11th that ended World War One, and the losses in World War 2, Korea (the forgotten war, except for those who served or lost someone), and Vietnam, I am not sure that "Happy" is a good word to use for Memorial Day. Reflecting on why we celebrate it, the word that comes to my mind in "Thankful". Without the services of all of those who have died while in the service of the United States, we would not be here today.

To all those on the forum, both in the US and those in other countries. have a

THANKFUL MEMORIAL DAY.

I march to my own set of bagpipes. Caution: This individual thinks that studying logistics is FUN.

They that go down to the sea in ships,
that do business in great waters;
These see the works of the LORD,
and his wonders in the deep.
