Free Trader series
Just stumbled upon this series by accident. Has anyone tried them and are they good?
Many of the reviews are favorable.

Following the civil war on the human colonized world of Cygnus VII, humanity and its creations rise again. Free Trader Braden and his mindlinked Hillcat are plying the trade routes of Warren Deep when things start to get hot. Giving events time to be forgotten, Braden gathers engineered (mutant) creatures to him for a trip south of the Great Desert where he hopes to find Old Tech that he can trade for untold riches. The more he learns about the ancients, the more he wants to learn. Along the way, he establishes a new ideal regarding trade and collaboration in the south where trust of strangers is unknown. Braden and his companions, a Hawkoid, a Hillcat, a Tortoid, and a female warrior find that some Old Tech still functions, with the potential to change their world for the better or worse, depending on what they decide.

The series omnibus was cheap enough in Kindle format. It just plonked onto my to-read pile.

There is also Andre Norton "Solar Queen" series which features Free Traders. Plague Ship and Voodoo Planet are on Project Gutenberg, and I believe that Sargasso of Space and Postmarked the Stars can be purchased online. Those were the ones written by Andre herself, and not the ones written by others with Andre's name on them.

These see the works of the LORD,

Honor Harrington was totally original with her "mindlinked Treecat".

There was pretty much nothing original in the first HH novel...
... except the specific combination of sources borrowed from.
I can visualize all the battles using Starfire 3 rules. Almost literally visualizing the dice and counters on the map.

In order: - Sargasso of Space
- Plague Ship
- Voodoo Planet
- Postmarked the Stars
And I concur the "co-written" novels in the 90s were not up to snuff.
