Just because it has magic, you don't have to use it. You can easily make your own setting, hard, soft, squidgey whatever it can be done. Starfinder is not 'elves in space', that is an option if you want to do it. You do not have to follow the setting in the book.

Much like people have been doing with Traveller, dumping the 3I and doing their own thing.

Hell it would be so easy to adapt Starfinder to make something like Traveller or say Firefly or whatever, if you wanted to. And I bet someone does.

That attitude has driven a lot of people from groups and tables. A game that is a poor fit to the setting creates a poor experience for many.

The rules are not suited for, and would be a pain to make suitable for, a critty realistic hard sci-fi experience. It's barely envisionable for a traveller-style "reasonably realistic" space opera.

Ignore the magic system: lose 3 core classes. Of 7.

Can it do Star Wars? probably - tone down the setting tropes within the rules, and only let force users play those 3 classes... but it wouldn't be satisfying, or it would entail a major rewrite.

Magic use is integrated into just under half the classes in the core. And it's typical pathfinder semi-vancian.

So, sure, you can rape the rules to force a game into a Traveller or even a Transhuman Space type setting... but the rules won't be on your side, and/or the result won't look much like Starfinder when you're done.

I agree. But I would modify that by adding on what you are trying to achieve. As I have said elsewhere, I am working on modifying the Traveller OTU into Vortex System(Doctor Who). It's a good match for a Space Opera for kids. You can do lots of Traveller-esque campaigns, even simple mercenary campaigns because of the two UNIT supplements. The one thing you can't do is a merchant campaign as Vortex has no economic system. The economic system, such as it is, is based on character points and story points via the vehicles, spaceships and bases rules. Not a perfect fit, but it serves well to get younger people into the OTU, which is my goal.

While I have never touched Pathfinder or d20 or whatever this is... the above quotes make me extremely interested ;-)

I already have my hard sci-fi game (Traveller)... I want wizards in space!

I'm not sure this was ever on topic for the Cepheus Engine Forum but I'm pretty sure it isn't now.

Any way we could move this to a Starfinder forum?

There's always Spelljammer or Dragonstar.

Then Starfinder may be your game...
Or Starjammer.
Or AD&D w/ Spelljammer.
