California Fires
Is anybody here affected?

flykiller October 24th, 2007 03:14 PM

yep. I was supposed to go see my son graduate from marine bootcamp this friday. ain't gonna happen. 15's closed, 5's partially closed, part of the witch fire is advancing on 8, and there are new fires popping up all the time. also there are no hotel rooms available anywhere at all. called several reservation centers down there, they don't even answer their phones.

I'm thinking maybe I could buy him a plane ticket so he can fly home, but that's about it.

Wow. So just how close are you to all this? Stay safe!

The smoke clouds are huge, and clearly visible from space:

I'm out in the desert, can't even see the smoke. they say the wind is changing though, so maybe tomorrow we'll see it here.

they say that many people refused to evacuate (million dollar houses, who wants to abandon that?) so early on many firefighters were busy rescuing suddenly trapped people instead of fighting the fire. I've heard mention of changing the law so that calls for help from mandatory evacuation areas will be ignored. "too bad, so sad."

lots of farmland burnt, this is a very big agricultural area.

two main power lines into the city, one is down and fire is advancing on the other, and the city can't quite support its full load on its own. good chance of some serious power outages.

5 was closed, then opened, then closed again in less than an hour. with 15 closed and 8 closed to big trucks I can imagine the city will be having gasoline issues soon.

Arson is being investigated as the cause.

California authorities and FBI agents searched a home Wednesday as part of an arson investigation into one of the wildfires devastating Southern California, a law enforcement official said.

The search was conducted in Orange County by the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the FBI, the official said. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing, would not say what was taken.

"FBI Los Angeles is assisting Orange County fire officials and sheriff's office in an ongoing investigation into the source of some of the fires," FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said. He referred all other questions to local authorities.

The fires, now in their fourth day, have destroyed 1,500 homes and caused at least a half-million people to flee, in what has become the largest evacuation in state history. At least 1,200 damaged homes were in San Diego County, which is just south of Orange County, and officials believe that number will rise.

Twenty-one firefighters and at least 24 others have been injured. One person was killed by the flames, and the San Diego medical examiner's officer listed five other deaths as connected to the blazes.

Thousands of people remained in emergency shelters, where many had an agonizing wait to find out whether their homes had survived.

Yeah, that just came across the local news, too. Unbeleivable... :nonono:

no, it's very believable. all these real estate "investors" sucking up homes for the sole purpose of driving up the price and then selling - now they're stuck with all these deadweight houses in a declining market with no way to pay for them. what's a "businessman" to do? a little arson, collect the insurance, cut the losses, and the taxpayer picks up the tab for any extra consequences. oh yeah, it's very believable.

'course, seeing all these fires suddenly pop up right when the winds are just right, could have been an attack.

maybe both.

jfetters October 25th, 2007 09:40 AM

Oh, I definitely beleive that people are craven enough to do this, I just think it's sick.

flykiller October 25th, 2007 12:54 PM

yep, wind has changed direction. all the smoke is coming over the desert now, from one horizon to the other.

and I'm driving into it, with my daughters. nuts.
