"Serenity"; your thoughts.

So, as per my blog, I finally broke down and started watching this series. It's an interesting mix of space-opera/adventure and western.

I can't say I'm too partial to it though. I was wondering what everyone else thought of it.

If you own The Traveller Book, in the back there's an NPC/Casual Encounter (pg. 128) named "Shawna". Once you've watched all of the episodes, go read the description for "Shawna".

It's a great series that probably shouldn't have been cancelled. Especially since it got it's own movie.

I consider myself a Browncoat, if that gives you any idea what I think of Firefly/Serenity.

ďTake my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I donít care, Iím still free
You canít take the sky from me
Take me out to the black
Tell them I ainít cominí back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You canít take the sky from me
Thereís no place I can be
Since I found Serenity
But you canít take the sky from meÖĒ

It's been 20 years since I read Shawna's profile / encounter. She struck me as a criminal; maybe even a bit psychotic.

Wow, for all of the allusions and other references to Serenity that I've read here and heard elsewhere on other boards and in real life, I figured people would be jumping in to give an opinion. Maybe it's not that popular a show, and maybe that's why it was cancelled.

You need to allow time (in the case of anything on COTI, at least a week) for people to respond.

Many of COTI's users are NOT daily readers. Many are weekly.

I love the show, I love the Firefly RPG. I love the Serenity movie. I'm not so fond of the Serenity RPG.

And Shawna is a very good match for a particular recurrant guest part....

Firefly/Serenity is too reminiscent of too many of my Traveller games for me to say anything other than it is absolutely brilliant and is Traveller with the serial numbers filed off (at least the tramp trader trying to make ends meet type campaign).

I'm a total glassy-eyed, drooling at the mouth fanboy.

I guess this counts as a vote for, yes? ;)

Traveller connections aside, I thought the characters were interesting and the stories were beautifully crafted. The drama was seasoned with the perfect touch of comic relief for my tastes.

I didn't realise until recently that Joss Whedon, the creator of Firefly/Serenity also directed and wrote "The Avengers" (2012) the marvel hit movie. He has incredible credentials having also done the "Buffy the Vampire" and "Angel" TV series plus more. Currently, (I never understand these titles) I believe he is the Executive Producer of the Marvel TV series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." which has gotten awesome reviews and is scheduled to start its second season in about a month.

You'll quickly notice a lot of similarities between the starship in Firefly and the flying headquarters of Agent Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. code named the "Bus"

Firefly was definitely an awesome series that was cancelled by network executives who didn't know what they had. One of the problems was that they originally aired the first few episodes out of order, and hence some people when they first watched it did not know what was going on (the 1st production-episode sets that up).

It was a series that by all rights should have had a long production run. The fact that it went to immediate profitable DVD sales and spawned a feature length movie is evidence of that. It had excellent, well-developed characters that were played well by their actors, with the sci-fi element more of a backdrop to the story as opposed to the sci-fi driving the action.
