hg2 combat with small ships

Many people think HG (1E or 2E) sucks REALLY BADLY for anything below about 10KTd.
anybody want to run a few hg2 sessions with small ships? dirt simple hg2, short/long range, 200 to 1000 dton ships, no maps or roleplaying, just design/roll dice/see what happens. how 'bout it?

Merchants vs pirates, 400t patrol cruisers, that sort of thing?
Could be fun.

Porting things like the patrol cruiser and corsair should be easy enough,

Q-ship version of the 400t subbie and 600t liner...

Things to note up front - civilian ships with small, cheap computers will be easy kills for top of the range military computers.

absolutely. if people really get into it then of course there's no limit - encounter rules, boarding actions, etc - but a simple start would be appropriate.

I already have the agzlu, the agzlu q, the erin, and the high flyer drawn up, hg2 constructs all and ready to go. the high flyer already has a significant crew (and a model 3), the others could be standard crew skill levels until someone wants to explore the results of high crew skills in those ships.

but of course (say it with a french accent). after all, The Man's got da Power ....

Something I did once was to make up a notional 'export' fire control/sensor package. This is the sort of kit that you might fit to a light warship or SDB that was being operated by a small government out in the cuds somewhere. It's OK (maybe equivalent to say a model/4 or /5) but nowhere near state of the art.

If you posit that light warships won't necessarily be fitted with the greatest electronics packages (e.g. model/6 or /7) then this export package is not all that inferior.

Now, if you were to take this electronics package and fit it to a merchant hull, you get a frontier transport with a bit of a kick to it, even if the armament package isn't too heavy. With a few backhanders, maybe a pirate warlord could get hold of a few.

I've done it enough in sessions to know that it's unfun for me and for every group I've used it with.

Mayday and book 2, however, aren't.

It's not a contest until you set some rules - if I field a 400t escort with a model 9 computer, agility 6 and a mix of laser and fusion gun batteries your 100t is toast.

Thinking about it the agreed upon parameters could be described quite succinctly, e.g. - 500MCr to spend, computer limited to model 5 max - that sort of thing; a mini billion credit squadron type game.

Wasn't in fact BCS thought to confront squadrons of those small ships (while TCS was for large ships)?
