From Onno Meyer:

A secure Imperial Navy briefing room. A rear admiral walks to a lectern while two armed marines close the doors. The audience, civilians and a few reserve officers, looks ill at ease at this display of firepower.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!
First, I want to thank all of you that you could find the time to attend this conference. For the record, the conference and all proceedings are classified most secret. You have all been briefed what this means.

We invited you for a fresh look at the data which we have collected on the new Darrian cruisers. Now where are the ... ah, yes ... you'll have to sign for the folders. Just the raw data, we don't want you biased by the results of our own analyst. This is supposed to be a second opinion.

Perhaps we should start with a brainstorm. Take a few minutes to read the documents and then write a short estimate of their capabilities."

Contest 24 calls on you to write an Imperial intelligence estimate of a Darrian Barekdoldin-class cruiser. Facts:

* It can be assumed that the technology level exceeds that of the current Imperial Navy and it may reach the old pre-Maghiz Darrian levels. That would make it classic TL16 or GTL13.
* Not being TL16/GTL13, the Imperium has no clear idea what this TL means. If you want to add higher-TL systems, who is to call you wrong. (Read: go higher if that is necessary for a good story/design. Prepare for hard questions from the crowd.)
* The Darrians decided to call the class a cruiser.
* Barekdoldins wiped out a Swordic base with pinpoint ortillery fire.

Mail your entries by Monday, May 10th, to me:

onno.meyer@gmx.de

I will acknowledge each ship within one or two days. If you get no reply, try again or ask on the board what happened. If there are no delays, the ships will be posted on the 11th.

Dang, I just did this for T20!

http://www.geocities.com/cmdrx/xtek/...arekdoldin.htm

Going to have to send to Onno, along with a GURPS version.

Evening cmdrx,

The JTAS design contest is open to all the Traveller design systems, not just GT. My suggestion would be to submit this one for the contest.

Is there any hull size or cost restriction?

Does it have to be in any way similar to the canon TNE Barekdoldin?

My original thoughts (and hence the drool on the keyboard as I muttered dreams of spinal disintegrators earlier ;) ) was that it was going to be pretty free form (not having read the books referenced) but when Onno posted the design parameters and included the class name I did some googling and found that it seems to be a 500ton J4 6G streamlined ship with light to moderate armor and a mixed bag of guns. There also seems to be a small craft (10ton Pod) and no marines, just lots of crew to man the extensive electronics suite.

I guess you could ask Onno over on JTAS for a more official answer.

A bit like this one perhaps? ;) :D

Too funny, guess you're half done

Actually, for the competition design I'd go for an antimatter power plant, meson and disintegrator turrets/barbettes, a jump rift projector bay, nano-responsive fluidic coherent superdense armour... and other flights of fancy ;)

Hello Sigg Oddra,

My take on the question of hull size and cost is that the vessel's dtons and MCr are open to the designer's interpretation and interpolation ;) of the specifications as given. However, when in doubt check with Onno, as far-trader suggests. If you don't have access to the JTAS boards someone here, who also has access to JTAS, might post the question or questions for you. If you would like I can do this for you and then bring the reply back over here?

Here are Onno's answer(s) to questions posed by far-trader on the JTAS design boards:

> 1 - Is there any hard data on the size of this class of ship?
> 2 - Is there any clue as to what constituted the ortillery (i.e.
> weapon type?)

Just to clarify ... if you assume it is 1120 in GT, you are not
bound by stats from that universe where the late unpleasantness
did happen on schedule. You can use them for inspiration, of
course. Like the old Darrians module. Or Humaniti. Or Starships.
Or FF&S.

Onno
