[SBRD] IC Game: Chapter 00 (Doc's hiring)

Talking with SpaceBadger about Doc Freeman's hire, he suggested that I speak with saberdog about the situation.

So, if you would be willing, I figure we could play a bit of side bar story line about the hiring and what Doc brings top the table (ship) besides being a doctor.

On Egarnigun (Daibei 1223), Captain Rhodes put into port and places a few feelers for various crew positions, one of which was for a medic.

A few hours later a young lad comes up to Captain Rhodes gives him a joker playing card with the name of a bar and a person's name, Doc Freeman, with a signature below it that looks like a typical doctor signature.

The boy smiles, 'The Doc would like to speak with you about a possible job.' , then runs off instead of waiting for the normal tip or reply from the Captain.

[OOC: This backstory bit would be happening in early April, 3731 AD, only a couple weeks after Hampton took over as Captain of Close Call. He and what is left of the crew are on Egarnigun (Daibei 1223), recruiting new crew and working to get the ship's identity altered and new transponder installed.

Just a little bit of setting detail from your Friendly GM! :) ]

Assuming we are back "In Character" here...

I head to the bar on the card and look the place over. Since I'm a trusting sort I have my autopistol under my jacket, but keep an open mind about such places. What's the place like inside when I get there?

[OOC: Do you guys want me to GM this backstory thread? If answer is Yes and to keep the setting consistent, then Dave, please email/PM me about what kind of place you had in mind - or just write it in here yourself.]

Yeah, you probably better to keep it all in synch with your game.

OOC: That would be fine with me.

Tavern, social kind of bar that has some game tables, allows cards, drinks and food.
Not a casino or gambling hall but just a local, maybe away from port kind of place.
If there is a college/Tech school, a place near there.

OK. It's a bar called O'Malley's, has green and maroon striped awnings outside over windows and doors, basic college neighborhood bar. Not a rowdy place with loud music, but quieter and oriented more toward professors and grad students, and other folks who live nearby.

Overall lighting is dim, but each table or booth has its own lamp with dimmer for the customers to adjust as they see fit. Main room has table that will comfortably seat 6, more if they are close friends. Bar is along back wall, or if you sit down at a table a waitperson will come by to take your order. There is a little more privacy in the line of booths (with tall seatbacks dividing them) that run along one wall and back down a narrower space, not quite a hallway, toward the restrooms.

That is what Hampton sees when he arrives and looks around.

I don't know where Doc is.

If there is a card game he is there, if not he is at the bar watching for any obvious spacer types or individuals who look out of place in social setting like this.

Max enters the bar shortly after the captain, looking and feeling out of place as he glances about nervously. This is exactly the sort of place where someone like him expects to be harassed by one type of security officer or another. Max would rather be somewhere else.

'Focus, you are here on business' he thinks to himself. Max needs to find a set of schematics for the Jump Drive if he is going to do some of the maintenance himself and save the ship some money. There are only two sources for that kind of information ... the shipyard, which already told him to 'Go to hell', and someone from the graduate program at the School of Engineering. Since spacers don't get appointments with college professors, Max will need to be more creative. When the Captain announced that he had business near the University, Max heard opportunity knocking.

It seemed a simple plan at the time, but looking at the people, Max was having serious doubts. He pulled nervously at his sleeve to make sure his tattoo was covered - a futile gesture since pulling at the sleeve briefly exposed the tattoo at his neck - and tried to recall his liaison training from back on the warship.

Max takes a deep breath and hurries to catch up with the captain. 'Dammit, how does he make it seem so simple to just talk to complete strangers like they were old friends' Max thinks to himself.

Hampton heads to the bar and shows the bartender the card. "Apparently this guy is looking for a job and I might be able to help him out. Know him?
