A big list of freebies (yes, all free). I haven't tried any of them except Blender and Truespace, but seems like a pretty good cross section.

25 Free 3d Applications you shouldn't miss

Renderosity has a great Free Stuff section, with tons of stuff for Poser/Daz3d (check their Tutorials section as well).

my favourite (along with the previously mentioned Concept Ships)
SciFi Meshes -

(Some of the guys on there are awesome - look for the famous never-ending Pluto Station model thread, the detail is quite insane)

Thanks. I'm going to delete posts after updating the lists, to keep it tidy.

By the same folks who make Z-Brush but it's much simpler and it's free and does much the same thing.

Generates Normal, AO, Cavity and Height Maps and many many others by mapping high res objects (say meshes made in Z-Brush or Sculptris) onto lower detail versions.
Can be used for generating effective colour/diffuse maps too (it's what I do professionally)
It's also free.

Not neccessarily for traveller specifically, but here's a site that has blueprint shots (front, top, side views) for tons of stuff - sci-fi, WW2, modern cars, planes, guns, trains, and on and on. Very handy if you ever need it.
