In my case, I was being polite and waiting one week before posting my interest to give someone else a chance to play if they wanted it.

On average, I'd rather not play an rpg 1-1 with the ref, but I think in pbp I wouldn't care as much,

I can see that. there's no reason there can't be other players, just thought I'd focus in on the captain's position. also with one player there's no delays caused by slow or vanishing players, the one player just gets to it when he can.

thinking about it I've noticed a tremendous tendency for players to prefer characters that give maximum freedom/power with minimum authority/accountability. nothing that they ever articulate, just time and time again finding that the lower echelons get filled immediately and the command slot (no matter how mild) is carefully avoided. I had thought a captain game might span that - authoritative position with isolated independence. but maybe even that is too responsibility-heavy.

Can't speak for others, but I'm happy to take the "captain/boss/leader" role but don't necessarily prefer it so I'll take it if is available and not sweat it if it's not. For THIS game I just didn't want to dominate your ref time and wanted to give others a chance if they piped up. As it is, I'll jump if you say jump.

(laugh) if you're up to it.

I envision a "how does this actually work" game. admin, planning, crew management, jump transit times, in-system transit times, sensor and comms ranges, police actions, etc, all focusing on the captain's perspective. role-playing as you get to it, but sticking with the captain may limit this somewhat. how do you envision it?

raise three skills (either these or add one or two unlisted) to level 2* (* means the character has been formally trained in them), and add two or three other level 1 skills as you see fit.

1105 imperial (or so). the commander, having completed assignments as division leader for engineering, flight, and gunnery divisions and as department head for operations and as instructor for (one of these), has been recently promoted and assigned command of an irkhuar-class patrol frigate - tech 11/13, 1900 dtons, j2, m4, beam/missile/sand/damper, crew 89, sx months endurance operating out of quar/chronor, to patrol neutral systems from rasatt to arden and ensure their continuing neutrality. I'll post a formal listing of ship stats soon.

senior officers: executive officer, flight deck officer, chief engineer, gunnery officer, operations officer, and security officer.

pilots and navigators are officers. chief engineer typically is back in engineering but will have a station on the bridge. the gunnery officer is on the bridge and can control weapons but typically will pass that over to the more experienced enlisted men. the flight officer merely is in charge of the bridge - the pilots, navigators, and enlisted personnel who maintain sensors, comms, and computers.

an officer's primary job is to make sure things get done and report to the captain. it's the enlisted men that do the work.

sorry, trying to get all this down I just revert to what I know which is u.s. navy. ratings are personnel ratings - how well the individual in question fufilled their taskings in previous tours/assignments. 4.0 is "perfect", 3.8 a little less, 3.6 more less, etc. in theory ratings should range from 0.0 to 4.0, but in practice because of ratings inflation/competition/etc the effective range is from 3.0 (unacceptable) to 4.0 (next chief of the navy and sector duke material). in general enlisted ratings are supposed to improve over time, while officers are expected to be always 4.0 "just because". any officer over lieutenant without a 4.0 pretty much is on his way out.

OK, a name...

Karnish Baidexsi.
He is Sylean. (I have my own views of what that means culturally. Probably doesn't matter much, unless it matters to you.)

Backstory...

I don't have a great inspiration, so I'd rather make up most of his backstory as we go along. However, looking at his UPP I see a fellow who is:

totally unremarkable physically,
highly intelligent and highly educated,
upper class.

From that I figure...

Karnish has always been smart enough to recognize his limitations physically, but his ego was still a bit bruised about it in his youth when masculinity demands athleticism. Nevertheless, he is well over that as an adult.

He attended college... make that the naval academy, and he excelled. He is ambitious and takes his first command quite seriously.

I have no idea if working aboard ship or even staying aboard while the ship is in port makes any sense in the real world. Presumably offices are readily available, arent' they? But regardless, I imagine that as this is his first command and he is leaving in days, he would like to see the vessel for himself right away and get acclimated to his work situation where he will be spending the next few months... unless that is totally beyond the bounds of protocol.

I have a question about the orders and rules of engagement (maybe Karnish does too, but I'm posting it here because maybe the answer is obvious to those with experience reading orders.)

He is (among other things) "...authorized to detain and search and investigate any vessel and crew..." and he is to verify various matters regarding Zhodani, Imperials, and locals. But he is also instructed that they "may return fire if fired upon" and yet he can "take all appropriate measures to defend your ship, your mission..."

So I just don't understand what exactly that all means for use of force. He can detain, but can't fire until fired upon? Does that means he just asks nicely or bluffs to get what he wants? Or do "appropriate measures" to defend the mission include use of force if somebody does not want to be detained or allow him to verify what he needs to? Or something else altogether?

Thanks for helping a dumb civilian out.

PS - I have never played or run an active-service campaign before, so I might have lots of dumb questions like this. I am realizing it will be fun to learn this stuff and maybe I'd be able to run such a game sometime and give it a sheen of verisimilitude from this experience.

Thanks for the work you do on all these write ups.

FYI - I was imagining proceeding thusly (baring unforseen developments):
1) Karnish will have a short conversation with Maye when she arrives at his cabin and then he sends her off to work.
2) Karnish spends the rest of the afternoon reading reports. This I imagine being accomplished with cinematic scene-fade-to-black rather than you actually writing much more.
3) Karnish and Maye and the port reps meet in the morning and perform inspections. I imagine this being a cinematic cut-scene-fast-forward to the end of inspections.

I don't think I post any more until Maye arrives for 1).

I don't imagine 2) and 3) as role played because it would be too much work for you to write, and I don't have any idea how inpections would work (though I'm sure Karnish does.) I'd like the "game" result of doing 1) and 2) to be that Karnish is better prepared when out on patrol, and he has more insight on his officers, crew, and ship having conducted the inpsections and seen everyone in action.

Unencumbered by any naval experience, it seemed reasonable to me that the CO could observe along with the port representatives as the inspection was performed. All the better to see the XO in action - she is as much a subject of inspection as the rest of the crew and vessel as far as I am concerned. CO would comment as necessary or as he had questions. I wasn't imagining a "ceremonial" or "parade" inspection but a "is-everything-and-every-department-in-working-order-and-what-needs-to-get-done-in-the-5-days-before-we-leave" inspection.

So give me a sense of what is kosher or not here and I will have Karnish answer accordingly.

I'm just making up backstory as I go along. I do that often if it's OK with others and I don't start out with an idea of who a character is. I just discover him over time.

In this case I decided he was too old to not be married. But his reaction early in the game was not of a man living with his family - he didn't say a word to anyone and spent the day on the ship - ergo, they must be elsewhere. That's all I got so far. Though I have spent a little time on TravellerMap trying locate where they might be; nothing yet.

EDIT: just to follow up on that last thought. This is what I'm kicking around. Karnish is upper class. I assume his wife is too. She didn't follow him to Quar; that is understandable, if they have means to live off base, as Quar is not only an Amber zone outside the Imperium, it is a low-pop, poor planet - more than enough reasons for a high-class lady to give it a pass. Of course this is also very suggestive of their relationship. They ain't honeymooners...

EDIT some more: OK, I got it. At least a picture of Karnish and his fam. Wife is also a hi-class Sylean. She loves her husband, but not more than herself. She ain't going to some rock in the neutral zone. She is on Jewell where she likes the comfortable life in the high tech city. Their only child is in prep school. Karnish is dutiful to his wife, but loves his career more than her. The time apart while he is on Quar is not overly difficult on him. He does miss his daughter quite a bit more, but teenagers...

How is that?

At this point in the game thread, I would propose you fast forward us to the end of the day, and just inform any insights Karnish gains in this process, since I wouldn't know what to do if we role played it out.

Karnish relies on his leadership skill to motivate and evaluate the crew and officers during the inspection.

He relies on his technical (and interrogation!? of the the crew and port reps) skills to evaluate the vessel's readiness.

well ok, but try to direct the game in-thread rather than here, so the game thread reads more readily.

have not forgotten this game. since it is just the two of us, I am giving it less attention and trying to keep the other moving. I'll sit down and write up the next step... I don't know, I'm travelling this week... soon.
