Ok, let's take some time out from our intrepid reporter's views on the invasion of Markham.

On Friday afternoon I awoke (I had been on nights) and when I eventually switched on my laptop it froze after about two minutes. It has done this with increasing frequency of late, worrying me slightly as it is similar to the behaviour exhibited before my logic board blew. Anyway, I usually just reboot and everything is hunky dory.

This time as it booted there were a huge number of icons missing from the dock, some that shouldn't be there. Many of my apps wouldn't run, others were missing their licenses, my e-mails were gone, as were all my bookmarks. Things weren't working right at all and to cap it off the disk utility showed problems with my boot disk that seemed to be irreparable.

I bit the bullet and tried to shift as much data as I could over to a spare hard drive and then wiped the disk and reinstalled.

At first the problems still seemed to occur, there were still disk errors and I couldn't load on new apps as the disk could not mount new images. The e-mail was still kaputt and then as suddenly as the problem began it sorted itself, I repaired the boot disk and the permissions and it all seems to work but I'm left with several issues.

All my photos are gone, these included several illustrations and CGI's I'd put together in the last month or two. There may be some salvage.

I've lost all my iTunes purchases. I'll need to speak to Apple about this.

Two quite ordinary documents for VoodooPad (a personal wiki) have gone containing some major gaming material (my Gerry Anderson's UFO game background, my Border Reiver Historic/Fantasy setting and Terran Federation ATU amongst others), all gone.

Quite a few licenses are missing. I'll keep digging to see if I can find them and I've mailed the owners to see if I can get them re-sent but till then I'll just have to make do. I cannot find my iLife disk so am missing some good apps there, also my Apple/Claris Works was on my install disks for my iBook and to get it i'll need to archive and install again and the update from panther to tiger.

So normal service will be resume asap and back up lessons have been learned again.

Repairs are coming along, some of the data loss is tragic but I'll have to compliment those shareware firms and even Apple for helping out replacing my lost licenses and restoring my iTunes downloads (I really wasn't expecting that). And my iBook seems to be running better than ever.

That's rough I know when that happened to me, ages ago, I vowed to always keep two backups of everything in case, one archived weekly and one daily. Naturally I've been backsliding Thanks for the wake up call. I've got some backups to run. Good luck getting everything back.
