Been away a while

I've been away a while, playing in Second Life. It's been interesting, but we have discovered a few things:
It doesn't work well for actual role-playing in some ways. It's great for "being in character" when doing dialog, but combat doesn't work so well. The main problem being that we haven't yet found a way to simulate skills and such. So, my skill with a weapon is entirely dependent on my video game skills and the power of my puter.
It's a lot harder to create an interesting world - if interesting means Non-Player Characters. You can simulate some things, but you really haven't considered how important the lowliest NPC is until you've had a fabulous city in which to RP - and it's totally empty (like a graveyard). All those things that get summed up in a ref's description - "The crowd moves slowly in the heat and humidity. You notice the lack of cacophony normally associated with a market anywhere in the known universe - it's very orderly and ...." - well, you get the idea.
To build a place to play takes a lot of money! And, if noone comes and rents houses and storefronts, it's a giant drain of money and time. So, you need those NPCs for more than color.... :eyeroll:
SL is a time suck! You can spend hours just wandering about, not doing much of anything, unless you count "camping" somewhere to earn a few pennies a day. It's still fun, though.
Oh yes - please go check out my MTU info (here). Please take a look at the info, and comment away.
