I Can Run!

I just discovered today that I can run. I'm pretty sure I have not run at all in over a year, since I started a medication (Lyrica) that makes it difficult for me to walk. I mostly shuffle along like someone very elderly (I am only 51), not lifting my feet much, taking very short steps. My neurologist explained it as the medication slowing the nerve signals between my brain and my legs/feet.

I can force something almost like a normal walk for about a minute at a time, but that's about as long as I can go, and it isn't really very normal - stiff-legged, kinda like my shuffle but forcing myself to go faster.

Then this afternoon two of our indoor dogs got loose and were headed for the woods, and I had a decent vector to get ahead of them and turn them back, and without even thinking about it I ran about five steps to get ahead of them.

I was amazed that I could do it! I guess I have just been assuming this past year that if I could hardly walk, I certainly wouldn't be able to run. I immediately went back inside and told my wife, my Mom, and my kids.

I then went back out in the driveway and experimented with what I could do. I found that I could run when I wanted, but only for about five to ten steps, then my legs were too tired and I had to stop and walk/shuffle a few steps, then I could run again, walk again, repeat. After a few minutes my legs were too tired to do it anymore, but I think that is because I have spent the last 14 months more in bed than not, and not walking much faster than a shuffle. I may try to get into physical therapy, or maybe just do it on my own, but I expect that strengthening my legs will improve my results.

I have an appointment with my neurologist in a couple weeks and will ask her about this, but my own theory is that the running is in "muscle memory" so my brain just has to say "run" and my legs already know how to do it. What confuses me is why this same thing won't work for walking. So now I seem to have three speeds - shuffle, fast shuffle, and run. Weird.

But I can RUN!
