A Corporate Coup by Andrew Moriarty (Jake Stewart #4)

How wonderful! Just looked at Amazon and discovered that a book that I have been awaiting for more than a year finally showed up on Kindle Unlimited, where I can read it for "free"[*1]. The book is _A_Corporate_Coup_ by Andrew Moriarty, and it is #4 in a series that I have enjoyed through multiple rereadings over the past few years.[*2] These are hard-sf novels, meaning the science and spaceships and so forth all work the way we think they should ...More Read More

Marvel Cinematic Universe - Where Are They Now Streaming?
30-Nov-2019: Work in Progress

Most of the MCU used to be available on Netflix, but now that Disney (which owns Marvel) has its own streaming service, it has been pulling most of the movies to Disney+ as soon as contracts allow. I wanted to make for myself a list of which movies are streaming on which service, and figured that since I was making the list I might as well share it with my friends. I'll try to keep the list updated as st ...More Read More

Dunno if that "IMTU" tag shows, but it should be obvious anyway: this is a framework to let me tie together MATUs that would otherwise be completely inconsistent, by setting them in different bands and sub-bands of Paratime, as used to great storytelling effect by H.Beam Piper in his Paratime stories (there are even clues enough to let it be argued that some 99% of Piper's SFF work belongs within Paratime, although it's never made explicit).

Regardless of my favorite author's usage of Parati ...More Read More

OotS #0899-0916 Rock!

The Giant in the Playground (OotS writer/artist Rich Burlew) seems to be taking a vacation - I hope no more health problems! - so I took a little stroll down memory lane with some old strips, #0899-0916. They're only a small piece of the book, "Blood Runs in the Family," but still a pretty cool piece of story. (Oh yeah, in case you didn't know, OotS is short for "Order of the Stick," the name of this awesome webcomic.)

Here's my starting point for tonight, Order of t ...More Read More

Playing Around With Orbital 2100

I bought SOLO and Orbital 2100 nine days ago, and still haven't had a chance to really play with them. I think I finally managed to finish reading both books, but feel like I really need to start over and re-read both of them from scratch. Plus, for better retention I think I need to start actually playing a game, as best I can, while I read through.

But maybe I'll start off with Orbital this time, to get a better idea how the setting works before I try t ...More Read More

Travels Down Memory Lane

Just had some interesting experience I thought I'd share. Dunno if this will have the same effect for all y'all, or I'm just weird bc of my damaged memory indexes from brain surgery January 2015, and subsequently not hanging around here from then until a few months ago.

Anyway, here 'tis:

First NEW GAME in a Long Time: SOLO and Orbital 2100

I recently bought my first new game in a long time, since maybe 2010 or 2011, I think. Or maybe 2012. My disability from Trigeminal Neuralgia started right after Christmas in 2012, and money got tight pretty quickly. It has only gotten tighter as my wife also became disabled with lung problems. So most of the time since then, when I considered getting new games, whatever the price was it would register on my brain as, "Too Expensive."

Testing Blog Comments Moderation Feature

EDIT: I can't believe that you guys are absolutely no help at all on this! I'm trying an experiment to figure out how something works here. All I need, all I ask, is a comment or two from someone other than myself. Fourteen views to date, and zero comments. It's quick and easy; why not help out?

Until recently I did not know that comments on a CotI Moot Blog could be moderated. Now that I know they can, I'm curious as to how it works. I think I ...More Read More

Proofreading Traveller 5.v10

One of the nice things about the Internet is the variety of distant people that it allows you to meet, converse with, and form friendships with, despite never having seen them face-to-face. One of the first things that I did when I got online in the early 1990s was to become active in Usenet groups and email lists related to my favorite games, Traveller and GURPS (their fusion in the form of GURPS Traveller wouldn't happen until 1998). I even managed to participa ...More Read More
