The erstwhile mayor of Chicago, who unfortunately will be around to 2023, has decided to keep the Chicago Public Schools closed, probably until the New Year at the earliest. The schools will, in theory at least, be doing online learning. The city's Health Commissioner was urging that the schools open for among other reasons, the students are safer there from being shot by gangs, and also the poorer students will get a hot lunch (and in most cases a hot breakfast) paid for by the Federal government. However, the Chicago Teachers Union threatened an immediate strike if the school's opened, claiming that opening the schools would be their, the teachers, lives in danger. Clearly, educating the students in not a high priority for the Chicago Teachers Union. The likelihood of many of the poorer students actually do online schooling is pretty slim. That also does not help parents who need to work during the day, and do not have means of supplying child care for the supposedly studying students. From checking with parents, students, and teachers will to talk off the record in the school districts I pay taxes for, the online lessons were a joke, with few students actually bothering to get online, assuming that they had a computer besides their cell phone. I hate to think what the test scores of Chicago will look like next spring, unless the district does a lot of falsifying of data, which I would not put past the district in the least. This is Chicago after all. The homeschooled kids are going to be way ahead of their public school peers at this rate. And no, the school districts I pay taxes too have not announced what they are doing as yet. School is supposed to start before the end of August.

The other Chicago idiocy is the mayor's total and complete lack of effort to get the violence and looting in the city under control. Excuse me, I forgot, under the new "woke" terminology, major property theft and damage is not violence, despite the windows being smashed and buildings wrecked. Police being hurt is also not violence, but payback for all of the sweet, innocent people that they arrest and lock up. Violence only occurs when someone who is protesting is hurt, after throwing bricks, firecrackers, Molotov cocktails, and other assorted objects at the police. I keep wondering how long some of the Chicago police are going to put up with this before they start to take early retirement or quit after finding a safer job, like Explosive Ordnance Disposal.
