The Babylon Bee has a post today on people fleeing Chicago for safer places like the Middle East. The satire is in fleeing to the Middle East, the fleeing Chicago is not satire. Actually, fleeing Illinois is not satire, but a straightforward fact. Illinois, and Chicago, are loosing people in droves, in greater numbers than any other state in the country. I will concede that some of it is retirees heading south to warmer winter weather, as the winters can be nasty. A lot more is simply people moving out to get to a state and city in better condition than Illinois and Chicago. The state and the city are both basically bankrupt, without the ability to pay off the accumulated debt, not to mention the pension problem.

Now, given the collapse of support for the police by the mayor, the crime and homicide rate is heading for historic numbers. The problem for the areas of the worst crime rate is that they are the people who do not have the wherewithal to leave. They are asking for more police while the mayor dithers about reducing police funding and sending in social workers. I keep waiting for the first social worker to be killed responding to a domestic dispute, while 911 tells them their is no police back up because none are available. it is just a matter of time.

The mayor is also probably going to have to be the one that declares the city bankrupt and goes to the Federal Bankruptcy Court. Per the actions in the Detroit bankruptcy, federal bankruptcy court trumps any provision in barring reductions in pensions, so all of those lucrative pensions Chicago has been handing out for so long are going to take a big haircut. Unfortunately, that option does not exist for the state. If that amendment to the state constitution passes eliminating the flat rate tax on personal income along with the corporate tax rate restrictions, do not get between Chicago and either the Wisconsin or Indiana borders. You will be trampled in the rush to exit. Iowa might get a boost in population too.

Then there is the case of Mike Madigan. Gad, Illinois politicians can be bought cheap.
