Well, I was not doing well enough this morning to visit my son, and the legs are still bothering me, but room service needed to clean the room. So I am out in the lobby on a hotel computer typing this.

We did have a good stop in Shipshewana for food and shopping. We bought Christmas/Birthday presents for three people. That is what happens when birthdays and Christmas are on top of each other. The presents can be for either, but it does mean that all of the presents are bunched in a month or two. Such is life and birthdays. We also put on the "to be purchased in the future" at least 4 pieces of Amish furniture. The quality of workmanship the Amish put into their furniture for sale is awesome. It makes the furniture in the stores around Chicago look amateurish by comparison. I had also never seen furniture made of Hickory before. My wife fell in love with a table made out of hickory, so that may be on her list as well. Then there was the Walnut dining room table. I did not drool on it.

Looking at this made me think of my planet, Vinland, in the Out Rim sector where the Mennonites and Amish have settled. I think that they have another source of interstellar trade than just food. The wood furniture that they will make will command a very high price in interstellar markets. Now, what sort of woods do they use, besides varieties brought from Earth. Put on creative cap and get thinking. Maybe something naturally aromatic, like cedar from Earth?

Also, does Vinland have Marsh Pigs? Need to think about that too, or possibly Terran imports via the Krell or the Baldies or someone else? Have to check John Taylor's books on African game for some ideas. Possibly some Dodoes too? They were supposed to be very tasty. I do have them for my color booklet and bestiary. They were about the size of a turkey, so clearly would be a good bird for domestication. Tis a pity that the Europeans did not think about that, or they would be still around. More items to go on the back burner to simmer for a while.
