I had thought that this post would go into some of my ideas for design sequences, or at least adapting vehicles to Traveller/Cepheus Engine. However, that sort of got kicked into the back of the line by what happened in Life this weekend.

A good friend of mine at church wife suffered a massive heart attack on Thursday night. It turns out that 4 arteries going to the heart were from 80-90 per cent blocked. After getting the family in town, she was taken off life support today as she was brain-dead. I know that Arne has been working on his weight and checking with the doctor as to what he should be doing, as he is only a year older than me. I think that his wife was the same age or maybe a year or so younger. It does not sound like she was having any problems, and she was getting physical therapy for a broken arm suffered earlier this year. Then BOOM.

Having been in that place of having to make a decision to withdraw life support, I will simply say that is a decision that you absolutely, positively, never, ever want to have to make. If you ever hear someone say that it is a no-brainer, the person saying that has just demonstrated that they have no brains inside of their skull.

Secondly, the loss of my friend, and I suspect that he is taking it really hard, reminds me that no one, absolutely no one, no mater who they are or how wealthy they are, or how renowned they are, has the slightest idea of how long they will be on this planet. I wonder how many of the Forum simply assume that they have many years left without considering that they are not guaranteed to wake up tomorrow morning, or even to get through the day. Sometimes, with something like inoperable cancer, you can see the end coming, but still with no idea of exactly when that end might be. So, if you cannot know when the end will come, are you ready to meet that end? As a Christian, I go with once you do, then the time for making decisions has ended, and you face the Living God based on the decisions you have already made. Thinking that because God and Christ are described as being Love, that you will not really face a judgement is not going to cut it. They are Love, but they are also Just and Righteous, and they are the God and Christ of the Old Testament as well as the New. I figure that there are an awful lot of people who think that they are okay, who are going to discover when it is far too late to do anything about it that they are not okay, and there Eternity is not going to be a happy one. I know that I am a sinner saved by grace. What are you?
