Someone mentioned in a comment about the magic issue in the sector. If you have read any of the Andre Norton books, you realize that magic is part and parcel of her writings. Probably the most vivid example of this is in Voodoo Planet, one of the "Solar Queen" series. Then you have the "Witch World" series, which is a blend of fantasy and science fiction such as no other authors have ever attempted. Note, I read Witch World when if first came out. There is the Wyverns on Warlock, with their odd Psi powers and what could be easily called "magic". Piper did not use psi to any degree, but the sector is inspired by the writings of both Piper and Norton, along with a dash of A. Bertram Chandler. Adding Norton means "magic" and some odd psi powers, while Chandler means "Kinsolving's Planet" and "The Rim Gods".

Remember the Star Trek episodes with Apollo and Trelane? That is also the type of thing that I am thinking of with the sector. When it comes out, take a good look at some of the planet names, including especially the ones that are Red Zoned, and do some thinking and research. Then ask yourself, what are fusion guns to a god?

Thank you! With the title that you supplied, I was able to find the story in my newly acquired H.Beam Piper Megapack kindle compilation. It is the story that I was thinking of, and does demonstrate evidence of psi abilities, at least possessed by the newly-discarnate spirit of Garnon of Roxor, able to read the minds of Dalla and others at his farewell feast, as well as take temporary possession of the medium provided (both of these would be psi abilities, I would think).

Greetings Chuck, it is The Last Enemy, and you can find it on Project Gutenberg. I believe that they have it in Kindle format. And yes, I have the Paratime Book.

Do you have the Ace book Paratime (I think?), with all of Piper's short stories featuring Verkan Vall and wife Hadron Dalla? (I think that is all of the Paratime stories except for Lord Kalvan.) Anyway, I haven't been able to find my copy of that book to check this, but I could have sworn there was one story featuring a timeline with psi in use - the one that claimed proof of reincarnation, IIRC. Do you know the one I'm thinking of?

Well now, I've read some Solar Queen stories, but not Voodoo Planet, but just so happens I noticed that it was included in that Andre Norton Megapack for kindle that I mentioned to you. Time to fire up the kindle app, methinks, and enjoy an old-but-new-to-me Norton novel!

Ah, said the asking person! Never read much Norton and missed the magic stories but I know about the time travel aspects. Hmm. Learn something new every day. Thanks for the info.
