Well, the sun is shining through the front window, and there is a big area of sunshine on the carpet. Normally, in past years, there would be two to three cats squabbling over who gets what spot, and it would be fun to watch them sorting out their pecking order. Generally, the male cats lost out, but sometimes the females were a bit slow, and the males got a good spot. Now, there are no cats arguing over what spots there are, and it is driving me nuts. We have had at least one cat since Nov ...More Read More

I have been going through the D. K. Brown books on British warship design from roughly 1800 through World War 1, along with William White's manuals on naval architecture (from 1877 to about 1900), and Hovgaard's history of warships from 1860 to 1920. Included in all of them are rules of thumb estimates on various aspects of naval architecture. Among them are things like square feet per horsepower for steam engine plants, sail area per displacement ton, space per man, the shape of the ship, et ...More Read More

I keep seeing proposals by the various Democratic candidates and members of Congress on getting rid of the Electoral College. Being an historian, I can understand that without the Electoral College, we would still be a collection of independent states with a loose confederation sort of holding us together. What is troubling is the fact that the various individuals making the proposals seem to have no idea as to what it would take to amend the Constitution to get rid of it. I keep wondering a ...More Read More

A couple of my wife's friends on Facebook monitor some of the other, non-mass media, outlets for news. Over the past three weeks, 120 Christians in Nigeria have been killed by Muslim extremists, and at least one church has been torched. Mentioned in the so-called Mainstream Mass Media. Zip, nada, nothing, silence. The Muslim mosque attack has gotten very heavy coverage. The difference in treatment is one reason why I pretty much ignore the mass media. The anti-Christian bias is pretty bla ...More Read More

I was going through Cloudships and Gunboats this afternoon, as one of the Mars scenarios is a caravan along a Dead Canal to try to establish trading relationships for liftwood trade with fewer middle men involved. The starting point will be Thymiamata, the principal American enclave on Mars. Well, in going through it I discovered the following comment.

Quote:
However, the American quarter of Thymiamata in Eastern Chryse now contains an American population of several thousand, and growing antihuma

Since these rules were written, a lot more information is available about Victorian-era shipbuilding and naval construction, among other things. I am not sure to what extent the new edition of the rules makes use of that, I know that I am not impressed with the free Quickstart version available online. It does not encourage me to spend any money on the full set.

One nice thing about the S1889 rules is that they do have a reasonable approach to inventing new technology. That is good, given ...More Read More

I am working on the Piper-Norton Out Rim sector, both the sector and the rules, along with the Space: 1889 campaign and background. I find that switching back and forth actually helps my creativity, as they are sufficiently different to force me to think in different ways. I do need to check on if there was ever any official or semi-official errata for Space: 1889, as there are a few bloopers in the rules and books. I do have some errata for the Sky Galleons of Mars rules, which I need to in ...More Read More

I thought about posting these in the Pit, and decided that at least one would not be allowed, so here they are.

I have been watching the Democratic Party try to pass a resolution against some anti-Semitc comments made by a certain freshman congresswoman from Minnesota, with a total lack of success for fear of upsetting her supporters. The resolution that finally made it was so bland as to be pretty much meaningless, and I admire those Republican congresspersons who voted against it. If you ...More Read More

The week I have a lot on my mind. I did not like to miss Gary Con, but I was not up to making it, and did have some other things that also needed to be done. It is not a case of work getting in the way of having fun, but life getting in the way of having fun.

I am going over my S1889 material, and I have come up with more ideas, amoung them adding reports from the British and Belgian consuls at Thymiamata to the new flashes to give some ideas as to how the other powers on Mars are reacting ...More Read More

Magic is also on the front burner. For a story that I have worked on (and now cannot find the notebook with all of my notes), for the D&D campaign, and for the Out Rim Sector. Paul Ellott offers one avenue, or a derivative it his is another possibility. Then there is the Rolemaster System of what I called "ordered magic", with some order to your magical abilities. Then there is the D&D system, much more of a fantasy magic system, with spells all over the map. Then you have the Harold Shea ...More Read More
