Warning! Bad fiction follows. LOL

The insistent chirring of the chrono finally forced her to consciousness. Feeling drugged and loggy, she eased from her berth and made her way to the fresher. The alarm went silent, sensing her rising and a merciful silence descended.

Being at base she spent a bit more time than usual in the fresher, feeling at least partially human when she stepped out and dressed herself. She gazed at her reflection for a moment, a touch of wistfulness in her eyes; she was retired now. At 56 years old her formerly rich red hair was now all silver, though she was remarkably unlined and her skin was still smooth. Boots, pants, tunic...all official duty markings removed, she was at loose ends for the first time in more than 30 years.

A smile burst into being; she was essentially independent now. She could go where and when she long as she reported her travels periodically, the 'Star's End' was hers to use. Suddenly she did not feel so tired and worn out.

Here on Emerald, in the Jewell subsector of the Spinward Marches, she was beginning anew, in a way. Time to see what lay in store.

Yes, was looking forward to more than four paragraphs when I clicked the "Bad Fiction" link. Not bad at all, would be happy to see more. Is this the same character you wrote about in most recent post, the retired Marine LTC?
