Well, the Democrats definitely have a vice-presidential candidate, but seem to have a part-time presidential candidate, as he at times is running for the Senate. He also have a problem remembering who he ran against 8 years ago, and a variety of things from his long ago teenage years. He also takes the view that if you are better off than you were 4 years ago, then do not vote for him. As 56% of the respondents to a Gallup Poll (for what that is worth) have the view that they are better off,

Walter Reed

October 6th, 2020 03:15 AM |
I have been reading with total astonishment at the insanity of some of the mass media commentators reacting to President Trump leaving Walter Reed following treatment for the Chinese flu. One, supposedly sane writer for the Washington Post has proclaimed it a "public health hazard" and wants Congress to defund it. Another, supposedly sane writer for the New York Times claims that "its reputation is in tatters", apparently because President Trump walked out alive from the hospital. I say "supp

I did not realize that it has been almost a month since I posted something here. I guess I lost track of time. There has been a lot going on. Tax season finally ended, but the new one will be starting soon, with who knows what tax changes. While the rioting has slowed down a bit, the Presidential campaign has gotten really nasty. A Babylon Bee piece, intended as satire, showing those who want to control your healthcare publicly saying that they want Trump dead off the virus, in not satire, b

Trade Planets-El Paso

#243
September 6th, 2020 09:30 PM |
I am working on a trade planet guide for El Paso, based on the planets that are within two Jump-3 jumps of it, in the Sword, Odin, and Tuatha sub-sectors. El Paso is in the Sword sub-sector, located at 0810, so the lower right-hand corner of a standard sub-sector map. This is proving harder than I anticipated, as I have to work up a longer background for El Paso, to include what trade goods are readily available, and also a background for each trading planet. That covers a wide range of plan

Back to Shipshewana

We finally got away from the tax office (this is the Tax Season that Never Ends) and spent a few days at Shipshewana and the Flea Market. Of course, the days the Flea Market was open were some of the hottest it has been in Shipshewana all summer, so I stayed in the hotel air conditioning while my wife went. She found some good stuff, but not all of the normal vendors were there. Hopefully, it will be back to closer to normal next year. We did hit the furniture stores, and are now trying to

Good News on Novel in Progress

I sent off to a friend of mine, who teaches a creative writing class, the first two chapters of a D&D novel that I have been working on. The word count is a little over 5500, and 14 pages so far. It is based on the old Isle of Dread adventure for Basic D&D. I bought the adventure when it came out, and still have my copy. To simplify working with it, I also bought the PDF file for it. She likes it and wants to know when she can see more of it. I will need to put my D&D writer's hat back on

Looking Over Blog

I have been looking over my blog the past few days, seeing what catches attention of readers and what does not, and it is an interesting mix. The single most read blog post is Sneering at the Military, with nothing else even close. I am not sure why Great Lakes Levels is so popular, and it has the most comments. A fair number of comments have 200 or more reads, with my first essay into blogging, Religion and Government, on Traveller is close to 300, so not too bad. My comment on my Signatur

School Is Closed Et Al

The erstwhile mayor of Chicago, who unfortunately will be around to 2023, has decided to keep the Chicago Public Schools closed, probably until the New Year at the earliest. The schools will, in theory at least, be doing online learning. The city's Health Commissioner was urging that the schools open for among other reasons, the students are safer there from being shot by gangs, and also the poorer students will get a hot lunch (and in most cases a hot breakfast) paid for by the Federal gover

I never did get to post my comments on the first Atomic Bomb drop on the 75th anniversary, and I suspect that the subject would be too hot (pun intended) for the Pit.
While some of the Ivory Tower Designers had no compunctions whatsoever with using it on the Germans, they did have considerable reluctance to use it on the Japanese. i suspect that they had no idea whatsoever about the bestiality of the Japanese in China and elsewhere. Go download Volume 4 of the Australian Army history of Wo

Thinking About History

#237

A lot to think about these days, between the Chinese Flu, continuing mob action, defunding the police and law enforcement in general, taking down statues, and of course, rewriting history to be politically correct.
Being an historian, it is the last the bugs me the most. How are they going to write the influence of white European males out of history? Sub-Sahara Africa never got beyond tribal groups, nor did they make it to even the Bronze Age, as no metal smelting. Forget shipbuilding.
